Advice for upgrade kits.

I haven't had any problems running my CV carb at 91HP. My tech tells me 100 with the CV shouldn't be a problem. I'll know more by the end of the week. What's a SU?

A stock CV won't handle that kind of power.I tried using mine and I could barely get it to idle .....it was jetted to the max and still starving for fuel. For the price of the CV hop up kits I just bought another carb(used) I'm running an SU now......best carb I've ever used.

An SU is a carb(the picture in my last post)........they've been around for a long time. They were originally used in cars like MG's, Triumphs,Jags. They are constant depression carbs and work similar to the more modern CV(constant velocity)carbs. The SU Eliminator I and II are set up to be used on motorcycles ,although you can use the old car carbs on bikes as well.I've run CV's,S&S,Mikunis, and others and this is the best carb I've used. The throttle response and performance is as good or better than a Mikuni HSR and I'm still getting lowto mid40's mpg.I was getting low to mid 30's mpg with the HSR.

That's a badass looking carb. My carb has the Thunderslide kit and jets. That's it. My bike should be back together this week and back on the dyno. I don't know if I'll break 100 but I'm hoping I get close.

WhatI meant wasa bone stock CV(that was my experience at least). The Thunderslide does make a difference
Even if you get mid to high 90's thats pretty impressive.****, a 91 hp Sportster is no slouch..........good luck ,I'd like to hear what numbers you get.

Well, I would probably just replace my pistons, cams, pipes, and ignition module, coil, and wires. I would also send my heads and jugs out. I would probably use all HD stuff (except the pipes, of course). You can get good headwork done for a grand; jugs bored for less than $100; pistons-$140; Cams-$300; ignition module, coil, and wires-$200; pipes-$425. That's about $2200. With labor and other incidentals, it comes to about $3k. Probably another $200 for carb work. How's that?

whats the news with the carb. I have been talking top the guy at nhrs and they are telling me that they can get the same hp as the zippers kit for about $1200 less and that includes new cylinders. No new carb though they say that mine rejetted, which it is, is capable of up to about 100hp. They did say I would get a little better throttle response with the mikuni though. Still got a few months to decide.

I have neither of these kits nor do I have parts from Zippers or NHRS. Disclaimer done, BHEBE55 before you take the big step to do this conversion I suggest you read up on them. I dont know if you are a member on xlforum.com but i would read some threads there as well. There have been issues with oil consumption, I dont know if TERP had issues and thats why says go to Zippers no but as a stranger with no money invested but wanting to make more power too im on the sidelines right now watching. Just a thought before you drop serious bucks to upgrade you ride bro

Dlish is right. I am a member of XLForum and there are tons of people running thw NRHS conversions with a lot of problems. I have no experience with them but I would probably stay away from them until some resolution is found. I recommend Zippers because they were the first to focus on the Sportsters and are considered the best. Read up and you'll see the same.
I only turned 94.5 HP so I can't tell you if 100 is possible or not with a CV. Another option is to do a Buell XB conversion. Go to your local HD dealer and get the part numbers for the XB12 cylinders, pistons, and heads. In the mean time, I'll check to see if the Thunderstorm heads will work. You can get complete, ready to use, heads for less than $600. Keep in mind that I got 91 HP using off the shelf Thunderstorm heads and pistons in my stock jugs. We should really look into the Thunderstorm route. I'll do some research.
