RE: Teaching the gf how to ride
girl friend took the msf course last summer, greatest thing she could have done, in between classes she had an 883 we bought for her and she totaled it, hit a pole, not one to give up, she completed the class the next weekend, got her endorsement, bought a 1200 C and is riding great, nothing better than riding next to her. sometimes you just got to let them do it on there own. check out her scoot her name on the forum is pamperedbiker.

Now sign her up for a MSF class so if she has another little mishap it will be on their dime, not yours.
Here's wishing hera speedy recovery from the bumps and bruises,
Primo
P.S. Bettermangled handlebars than a mangled GF.

RE: Teaching the gf how to ride
Get her to learn on a medium sized 150cc - 250cc dirt bike, not a mx bike. When (not if) she falls, it won't hurt as much and it will teach her what she never wants to do (fall). Dirt is slicker, so she won't become over confident - like a lot of newbies do on the street. Dirt riding is also unpredictable, so she'll learn how to avoid things that come up unexpectedly, and also what a bike does when you hit really slick spots or a pot hole or the brick that damn truck just dropped in front of you...
Best thing I ever did was learn how to ride off road really well before riding on the street. It's already saved my life. And while there is a difference in the handling of big street bikes and dirt bikes, the basics are the same. What people need to have as second nature "don't have to think about it" reflexes are the basics. If people don't master those, getting on a street bike is a bad idea.
