Default What's the sportster like?

Just need as much information as you guys can give me on the 883 sportster, speed, power, handling etc.
I have just managed to save up enough cash to buy myself a HD and on visiting the showroom for about the hundreth time i am opting for the sportster model, mainly because of the bikes looks and the fact that they are sensibly priced.

Thanks Billy.

Their a great starter bike all the power that most need .
Do yourself a favor get a 1200 their will be a day when you sell it and all you will hear is "to bad it's not a 1200 I would buy it" !!!

Check out my tricked out Nightster for sale in the for sale section not even a year old.

Good luck ...

Thumbs up

Many Call a Sportster a Starter Bike which for many happens to be the truth but I have loved Sportsters for 40 years.. My Sig Pic shows my 2004 which will probably keep forever and the Thumbnail Pic is on my 69 XLCH .. Regardless Can't go wrong with a Sportster whether as a Starter or a Finish Bike they are Harleys Longest running and til recently Fastest Model...

Well I have an 06 883, I like it but I will be looking to convert it in the near future. As of right now it will haul my 250 pound *** to a top speed of 105(at least that is what the speedo reads). Plenty of power if its your first bike or if all you have ridden is small bikes. If you come over from the crotch rocket crowd then no, it will feel underpowered. Actually a 1200 will feel under powered too. I think it handles really good, better than most I would say. I like it better than my R6 that I had as far as rideability, its much more forgiving. It won't be my last Harley and I won't buy another sporty though, just not enough room. Though I do plan on keeping it forever or until I crash it.
Reliabilty has been awesome. It's also pretty easy to work on.
As far as resale value goes I would say that just as many people will be interested because of the price, it will be cheaper than a 1200. At least that is why I bought an 883. All in all it's the best bike I have ever owned, but give me a chance to get a Road Glide and I'll jump at it.

USA is right though, if you get a chance get the 1200, you will like it better.

+1 on the 1200. I had an 883 and riding by myself, it was OK, but add a passenger, especially if a little on the heavy side, and you will notice the lack of power.

Great bikes. I've owned 3 Sportys ( 77 XLCR, 99 XLH, 04 883) and loved them all.
They're better suited for 1 up shorter cruises. If you plan on doing some miles with a passenger, you might consider looking at something a little bigger.

Compared to what I've owned, it's slow, brakes poorly, handles poorly, etc. But on the other hand, it has the most character, best looks and sound of anything I've owned. Except for maybe my Ducati...., but it's also the most fun to ride. Unbelievable, but true.

Take a good long test ride, decide for yourself.

Best review I've ever read....

There's something magical in riding a bike around designed with 50's technology
