Put some carb/injector cleaner in it. Check the fuel line filter. Start up at the top of a very long hill. Trade it in. Give it to charity. Sell it and run.

I see several things wrong with this picture.

1. The battery should have a Battery Tender on it when it's sitting over the winter.

2. During winter storage you should you should never take it out and run it for 10 minutes. Not only does that cause condensation to form in the engine and oil, it's not enough time to recharge the power removed from the battery when you started it.

3. The gas should have a stabilizer added to it during winter storage.

4. Your using way to much choke.

if there was enough juice in the battery to start...and bike died later...id think stator.
or could be a bad ignition module, sometimes with a bad module, the bike will get to a certain temp, module shorts out, bike dies, then when bike cools it will start back up.
could be alot of things, but these 2 are likely.
also could be a loose wire to coil.

Hey, cHarley-

Thanks for the feedback. Like I said, I'm still learning here, and I appreciate forums like these filled with knowledgeable folks who are willing to help. Now I understand why my 'new' battery was so dead, and also why I had most likely fouled the plugs. One other question, though... Is completely disconnecting the battery a suitable alternative to running a battery tender, or is it always best to use a battery tender in the winter?

On a positive note, after charging the battery, I started her up, turned the choke completely off after about 20 seconds, and then took a ride. I could tell that she needed a moment to burn off the excess fuel, but after that, she was running great. I rode down to the gas station and filled up with some 93 octane, and all is well in the world once again.

Thanks again, everyone, for the help!!!

Probably some bad gas or junk in the float bowl. As stated above do not start a bike while in storage. Put seafoam or stabil in a FULL tank of gas and plug in a batt tender to keep the battery good. If you live where it freezes in winter a poorly charged battery will freeze and crack, charged batteries will not freeze.

Depends....Typically, pull the choke all the way out to start the bike up, then push it back in half way while idling for a couple minutes, and then I hop on & ride...my choke slides the rest of the way in as I ride due to proper choke tension nut setting. If proper tension is not set, then push it the rest of the way in a couple miles down the road.
