Default Weird start-up

The last few days I've been riding my 05 883 to work (60 mi each way), in 100+ degree weather. I have never had any issues. Yesterday after I got home I had to run out to the store (about 30mins after I got home). I started the bike from neutral w/ clutch in. It was having some trouble starting so I gave it a little throttle. It started but would die out if I didn't give it gas. I tried pulling the choke out but it make no difference at all. I put the bike into gear to see if it would run, and it did. As long as it wasn't idling. After a while this issue went away and the bike operated as normal. I'm wondering if this is due to overheating? Or something else? This has never happened before. Also, bike had oil.

Thanks.
