Default oil change help

Ok my wife has a 07 883L the book says it takes 4 quarts 3.6 in tank and .4 in filter. I pulled the plug from the drain hose, drained oil did not look like alot, pulled filter. Added oil to new filter let sit, put filter back on, added 3 quarts to tank it filled it to top. started bike let it run, when it started oil light went off. drove bike down drive way and back let it get warm. checked oil and it was way to high and looked foamy drained some to get to right level. still have almost a quart left. What did i do wrong and why is it foamy.

Most likely, you didn't get the old oil hot first, and/or didn't let it set long enough. After opening the drain and removing filter, let it set for 1/2 hour or more before replacing. I also rock the bike a bit to be sure that all the oil is out. Some people even add fresh oil and wait until it runs out clean to be sure that there is only fresh oil in the tank. It looked foamy because your oil level was so high that the oil got aerated. The oil level was that high because you didn't get all the old oil out.

The book might be wrong in the amount.
from another members post.

the2004-2007 Sportster Oil .
Capacity

Service literature for 2004-2007 XL models incorrectly lists oil capacity as 3.6 quarts (3.4 liters).

The correct amount listed should be 2.8 quarts (2.65 liters).

Oil capacities listed are approximately the amount required to bring the fluid level near the full mark on the dipstick. Refer to the applicable service manual for the complete oil change procedure
Service Note:
Be aware that the dipstick has a Full mark to indicate the highest level of oil that should be installed in a hot engine and an Add mark to indicate lowest level of oil in a cold engine. The engine is designed to operate correctly with the oil level in the range between these two marks. While it is most important to not overfill the system, it is acceptable to operate the motorcycle with the oil level anywhere in the range between the Full and Add marks.

Kmealp, read your book again. 3.6 quarts total. That already includes the 4 ounces you poured in the filter.

My Owners Manual say 3.6 quarts. My Clymer Maintenance Manual also says 3.6 quarts.
Make sure you check the oil level with the bike on the kick stand and not with the bike straight up.

I think that is a misprint in the books .Harley sent out a service letter to their dealers in 07 # 312 .

Thanks for the info. I'm changing the oil in my 06 1200C this morning. I'll start with 2.8 qts and see what the dip stick says : )
I'll let you know. This will be the first time (at 5000mi) that i'm changing the oil myself.
On a side note.
When the dealer did the 1000mi service, about 2 months ago, the bike came back with no oil on the dip stick. I had to add a quart. Makes me wonder which info they were using ????
