You don't mention the rest of your setup so if you have a stock air cleaner like so many others I don't think it will damage the engine. It could well affect performance though.
A lot of people are just changing pipes to get a noise without retuning the engine and as they are not burning up pistons it cannot be running lean. I mean it could be leaner than optimal as new bikes seem to be but not so lean to cause damage.
