exhaust

From what I have read and seen there is a ctalytic converter in front pipe of my 06 883c. Can this be removed? Any help or suggestions?

XL50#674 10-14-2011 07:31 AM

From what I know there is no cats on a 2006. I know my 2007 1200 did not have any cats. On the newer big tiwns there is a cat in the front head pipe, but not ever sure if the new sportys have them?

Scuba10jdl 10-14-2011 09:53 AM

Sportsters have not had catalytics added yet. That is only for the Big Twins so far.

Shackleford 10-14-2011 09:56 AM

My 2002 1200 has cats. They climb on top of the seat when I'm not around and leave paw prints... Damn cats...

:P

parabellum_9x19 10-14-2011 11:51 AM

There NO catalytic converters in ANY sportster models up to and including the 2012 model year*.

*Except apparently for California and International models, this is new information to me as of this thread (see pics later which clearly show a cat in the pipes).

Jaystn62 10-14-2011 01:54 PM

Ok if it's not a cat then what is it? rear pipe doesn't have this and it's stamped right on the side catalyst and some legal mumbo jumbo.

We will need some pics I think.

Jaystn62 10-14-2011 02:33 PM

If anyone can tell me how to post pictures I'll be glad to try. I don't know if I can get a picture of inside pipe but I can what is stamped on the pipes. Just trying to learn since this is my first Harley. And whatever it is looks awful restrictive. Thanks for any help.

Are ya sure it's not the baffle in the muffler? the mufflers usually have some legal thing stamped under it.

The final word. Sums it up 100%. Big Twins yes, Sportsters no.

Has to be the baffle. Both pipes should have them, unless the front has been removed. Is this a tube that is hollow, with the end plugged, and a series of holes or louvers all in the sides of it?

BTW, gonna have to host it with a site like Photobucket. Then copy the direct link address and paste it to the "IMG" button.

Jaystn62 10-15-2011 12:52 AM

I don't know if this means anything and shouldn't pertain to me but my owners manual states on pg 45 that California and all international models are equipped with catalytic converters and under that has the unleaded fuel warning. I live in Ky and bike was bought new in Ky so it shouldn't have anything anyway right?

Jaystn62 10-15-2011 12:56 AM

Ok Tenn ty on pic thing but no this looks like a smaller version of inside of auto catalytic converter Buddy and I just put Vance and Hines head pipes on his 2010 Street Glide and make up looks same as his converter but just smaller and in front pipe only on my Sportster strange

Myteeman/06fxsti 10-17-2011 08:51 AM

My wife's '06 had catalytic converters in the stock mufflers. Easly taken care of by a set of slip ons. What a differance that small change made, easy start up, smoother power band. GET RID OF THOSE STOCK MUFFLERS/EPA BULL SH?$T!!!

parabellum_9x19 10-17-2011 10:20 AM

Um...holy crap....that is DEFINITELY a catalytic converer in your pipes!!???

This goes against pretty much every expert on these bikes who insists that harley has never put a cat in their pipes.

I know in my 2012 iron, there was absolutely no cat, because I checked when I swapped out the stock mufflers for my CS slip ons.

This is the first time I have ever seen or heard about this.

Could her bike have originated in California? I know that they have the strictest emissions standards in the nation, so for all I know HD has to do that to sell bikes there???

This is crazy, we need cHarley or some other expert to come in here and help sort this out.

Rush Racing Products 10-17-2011 12:44 PM

Since 2010 all Harley bikes have a catalytic converter. The touring bikes have it in the headpipes along with the fatbob and wide glide. All other models have the cat it in the muffler.

California passed a law that goes into effect in 2013 where on brand new bikes you can not modify your exhaust unless the replacement is stamped epa approved. Baggers, having the cat in the headpipe will still be able to change slip-on mufflers. All models with the cat in the muffler, will not be able to make any exhaust changes that are not epa approved/stamped.

Ryan there must be a misunderstanding somewhere.

My 2012 Iron does not have cats in the pipes at all, I'm dead sure because I had my pipes off recently.

Every Harley comes stock with a catalyst exhaust of some type and has since 2010, it was EPA mandated. Sportsters have catalyst mufflers, this does not mean it will have a cat you can see such as in the bagger headpipes. I have never personally seen inside stock sportster mufflers but I can guarantee they are cat equipped.

What I don't understand is why there is one in front muffler and not one in rear muffler. Could this be a mistake at the factory? My bike was built in Kansas City,MO. Bought new here in KY. Anyway I want it out. That things looks like it almost has the pipe totally plugged. Thanks for all the replies.

I can only assume this was done because it was all that was needed to meet minimum EPA requirements. I have no solid info as to why.

Ah ha...so it did have a cat, it was just some kind of hidden cat in the slip on muffler, not the primary?

Man, that makes me want to hack that thing in half and see what's in there, but can't do that, I may need to throw them back on someday if I move to a place that actually checks emissions.

There is actually a trace amount of platinum in there.
I am allergic to cats. They make my ears itch for more sound.

Jaystn62 10-18-2011 02:06 AM

Have muffler and headpipe off. Going to take to work tomorrow and see if I can do some platnium mining. Hopefully end up with a better sound.

parabellum_9x19 10-18-2011 09:37 AM

I checked my mufflers and its impossible to tell. They are NOT stamped "catalyst", they have plenty of stamping on them, but no mention of that word....not that I guess that means much.

They are heavy bastards though.

SportyPig 10-18-2011 10:51 AM

My 06 Sporty does not have a cat, and neither have any of the other Sportys I have worked on.

HOWEVER:

First the Dislaimer: I never like to spread gossip, and I can't vouch for this information...but..

I have heard from a few people, that HD experimented with cats of a limited number of 06 Sportys. Like I said, I can't verify this, and I don't really know how reliable the sources of this information....

So, take it for what it's worth.

sickboy949 10-18-2011 01:06 PM

I'm in Cali and my stock nighster had that printed on as well when I asked about it they told me it's referring to baffle type for Cali .I'f one pipe is missing it I would say they cutt rear one out. I did this cutt one out chk sound for a day then cutt both center holes out

Jaystn62 10-18-2011 02:12 PM

I'll take photos if I can get this punched out so eveyone can see what I see.
