Default Belt to chain conversion.

I am converting my 06 XL883/1200 from belt to 530 O ring chain. I have a 25 tooth transmission sprocket with a 3/4" offset.

Will be running a flat rear sprocket. Does any one know how to figure out the thickness of a rear sprocket spacer I will need.

Thanks in Advance

John

Why?
Belts are clean and no maintenance.
Chains are messy, need regular lubrication and adjustment on long trips.
Why?

right . . just curious why? Belts are the 2nd best (1st being EFI) that HD has offered in recent memory.

My BMW u joints went bad at about 30k, chains are good for half that if your lucky. I have 25k on my belt and a clean rear wheel and I don't carry a can of oil.

My bike is one of the last with a stock chain, the OEM one only lasted a couple thousand miles and the rollers started coming off, giving the bike a chugging sensation. I had the same thing happen years ago on my RD400, so that was kind of strange. Put on a new chain and have not had that problem again.

Also, don't buy the PJ1 Black Label, like me. The stuff is a sticky mess to deal with, but I'm too cheap to switch until I use up what I got. Been almost 22 years and the can's about 2/3 full, so maybe in another 40 or so.

I think the Dupont Chain Spray or Multi-Purpose Lube is highly recommended, goes on clean and doesn't make a mess, or at least what the PJ1 Black does.

Done!!! List of parts used.

(1) PBI 283-25T transmission sprocket with .500" offset.
(1) PBI 2073 60T flat sprocket.
(1) MotoParts 530 -120 O Ring Chain.
(1) Cycle Parts for less DS1201-0600 1/2" rear spacer.
(5) Five Fastenal 7/16-14 X 2 1/4 long Grade 8 Hex head Bolts.
(1) Tube of Red Locktite.

For a grand total of about $240.00 for parts including shipping.

Some people have asked me: isn't that a step backwards? My reply is that I just want
to put the SPORT back into my Sportster! I also do some off road riding so this was a
logical choice.
