did a few things over the last couple days....
So the last few weeks Ive been preparing for my cross country trip. Trip spans from June 30-July 14. Itll be me and 3 others that ride.
Before the last few days.... my bike had a tiny peanut 2 gal tank and stock controls and stock seat. I recently replaced the stock controls/mids for a black set I purchased on ebay. That went well. Due to getting sub-par gas mileage on the tiny tank and with stage 1 kit, I can barely get 70 miles to the tank between the 1250 hammer kit, 2 gal tank, and the S&S ac. So rightfully so Ive purchased a 4.5 gallon tank from jp cycles...Sweep deal on it too. So this morning before coming into work...I dry fitted tank and started getting it ready...ie dry fit, redkote liner and let it cure. This weekend Ill be painting the tank..sticking to black. Im gonna try my hand at a rattle can paint job . :icon_razz: Anywho...heres a few pics from this morning.. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...c3b521f55c.jpg removed old tank to dry fit 4.5 gallon - I like... oh how the heck can I get the oil cap to seat properly?? Wont seat right for the life of me so my hammy always hits it if I dont sit (just right)..on stock 2 up seat..going to a solo lepera seat once tank is on. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...ec106c897e.jpg how do i look?? hahah https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...8b4c1c5d2e.jpg My terrible tape job...this resulted in a mess!! lol https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...3632cc5c9c.jpg my working area.. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...0721ed820b.jpg had to make a funnel from an old water bottle...haha creativity!! Look at the red kote setting already..goodness https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...749c5638b4.jpg more prep work.. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...0ee5da50d4.jpg masking tape fail!! haha so much for salvaging leftovers. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...1dc5f5b7ff.jpg leftover from initial pour https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...971c532020.jpg inside.. More to come.... :icon_hyper: If you are going to rattle can the tank yourself, you can use a 2 part clear coat by Spraymax. It comes in gloss, semi-gloss and matte. It's a two part catalyzed spray that is very resistant to gasoline. Most clear coats and lacquer paints literally melt away when you get a little gas on them. I can verify that the semi-gloss finish gives more of what I would call a satin finish. It's a nice look and holds up really well to solvents. I haven't used the flat finish but I imagine it's pretty damn flat since their semi-gloss is really a satin finish. It's about $20 a can and you can only use it within 48 hours of mixing it but it's worth it if you want protection from gas on a DIY rattle can paint job. http://www.spraymax.com/index.php?id=361&L=1 |

Use a good primer (Distinctive Image DI-764 High Build Primer in black is my favorite for dark base coat colors) laying down 2-3 light coats about 15 minutes apart. Let that cure for a day or so in a low humidity environment (like your living room :) ) and then sand it lightly, all over, with good quality, 400 grit paper. After lightly sanding it, blow it off, wipe it with some clean lint free rags to get the main primer dust off, and then use a tack cloth to get it really dust free. Then you're ready to spray your base coat black. Use that SprayMax semi-gloss clear coat when you're done, and as long as you spray light coats, evenly and don't load the paint, you'll be really happy with the results. Good luck. |

10 years is damn impressive.
Was it doing the standard XL1200 hesitation before start? I've replaced 2 batteries in 2 and a half years on 2 different Sporties. Both hesitated before starting prior to battery replacement but there was no hesitation after replacement on either bike. I keep reading that hesitation is normal for a 1200, but I'm not sure I'd agree with that. |

I know it seems like it is tight before you push it in, but it needs a little more twist before that to line up. At least that is usually the solution. Make sure cap is dry so you can a grip to twist it fully seated. A drop of oil on the O-ring helps a little also.

Use Scotchbrite pads and lacquer thinner to clean the outside of that tank really well. Then hang it from a piece of wire, spray it down with lacquer thinner from a bottle sprayer, dry it with a hair dryer and wipe it with a tack cloth. It's ready to prime.
