rear shock upgrade on 2011 iron 883

I am trying to make my iron ride a little better without changing the looks too much. I have been looking at the progressive 412 and 444 heavy duty at 11.5 or 12 inches. I am 5'11" @ 209 lbs. And the stock shocks are brutal. If any of you guys can give me any input I would greatly appreciate it.

I have gone with 12.5" progressives twice, on a 09 Nightster (412HD) and a 13 custom (430 standard) both times it was well worth it. Since my wife has here own ride now (11 Iron) I did not get HD springs on my custom. Went with 430s because I really liked their looks and they are a step up over 412s without breaking the bank. Since the shocks are angled, 12.5s will not raise the bikes up 1.5". The 12" and under progressives have a stiffer spring than the 12.5". HD are for over 225lbs. Progressives are widely used, but you will likely get some responses dismissing them and suggest some $1000 shocks.

This is how my bike looks now. How much will the 12" shocks lift the rear fender

No one will probably notice but you :) My guess from my experience probably sit 1/2" higher. I went with 12.5 because with the custom it is not so much about the slammed rear look, plus comfort and ground clearance far out way the higher rear for me. I like to be able to ride off for 3 days get a ways in the mountians. On mine, with the full fender, the 12.5 looks just fine, doesn't sit above the tire. You can have maximum slammed look or comfort, but not both.

Had anyone added the 12 or 12.5 to their iron. If so how much did it lift the rear end

hey John, what shocks did you end up putting on the Iron?

I recently added 13" 412 progressives to my Nightster. There is about a 1" gap between the rear fender and the rear tire, it's really not that noticeable. The ride definitely improved but I've heard it's recommended that you do the front forks as well.
I am looking into raising my forks to the standard length. 24.25" is the standard length I believe.

Call progressive.. they are very helpful on the phone and will answer alot of dumb questions.. I know, I recently did it myself.

If you're considering spending the money on the 444 shocks......You should really get these - http://www.fuelmotousa.com/i-2085954...xl-models.html

Ohlins is superior to Progressives. When you purchase them they send a spring specific to your weight and riding style. As with most shocks, you can also adjust pre-load if need be. Top Fuel Moto has the best prices and their customer support is amazing - not to mention Ohlins USA Customer Support as well.

Here's a link to my previous post on it:
