Default anybody here a do-it-yourselfer - with paint?

Im gonna post this here and in main forum.

I have a black 2000 Fatboy, with flat black VH pipes. Im the exact opposite of the guys who wash and wax their pony after every ride.

I live in a coastal area and never wash it so needless to say the chrome in alotta places is rusty as ****.
The worst is the engine guard. I wanna just sand off the remaining chrome and spray the whole thing black. If you were me, how and what would u use? A new guard costs about 250 bucks. im just looking for a <$50 "rejuvination".

I would see how much it would cost to get it powder coated. It will hold up better then paint on a part like that

If you are going to paint it clean all the rust off and scuff very well. Paint with self etching primer then shoot with high temp engine paint. But be warned it will eventually peel off.

You can but it will peel faster without the primer.

Did my whole bike with Rustoleum satin black spray bombs from Lowes. Pretty durable (I did my fork lowers about 6 months ago and they still look good). Here's a link to the post on the Sportster section.
