I always loved Harleys but never thought thatI could own one untilI started working with a 1%er. Turns out my boss was the Pres of aHA chapter. After a few months I traded my car in for a Sporty and started hanging around. Lotsa fun, lotsa trouble, lots of fighting. Crazy shit that I'm glad I got past. Now I just ride to ride.

None of the above. I was inspired by my oldest brother, my brother-in-law, my childhood friends that had dirt-bikes, and the Discovery Channel. Everybody looked like they were havin' a helluva goodtime, just had to wait till I got to a point in my life where I could afford a bike.

Nope. My inspiration was actually Evel Knievel. A mans man.

None of these fit so I didn't vote. Inspiration came from seeing all types of folks riding them. Started wanting to be able to tell the different models apart from each other at a young age and finally bought mine when I got older.

I hope this ain't fact and just more of the Rick twisted humor but if it is I truly feel like killin' someone.

Feel free not to clarify.

I didn't vote either as no choice was correct. The first choice should have been just "Not at all" without the additional "I hate Outlaw Bikers" added on. Anyway, who cares really, I just like motorcycles and always have. JMPO :D

Yeah, same here. I don't hate them, hell, I don't even know them- everything I know about them comes from Hollywood, Under and Alone, and this forum. Not good sources of firsthand knowledge. I've never really had any sort of contact with 1%r's, good, bad, or otherwise.

I've always been fascinated by motorcycles, parents weren't letting me have one, so once I graduated from college I went out and bought the Deuce. This August will be our 6th year anniversary together. Fun times.

Believe it or not, my inspiration comes from my sister and her husband. They have owned Harley's since I can remember. Always thought one day I'd own one, and the day is now. :D

My inspiration was my dad. He rodeHarleysin the 1940s and 50s. Then in 1969 brought home a Honda 50 for me and a Honda 350 for himself. We rode together until his health failed in his mid 70s. Oh, by the way, he was a charter member of the Bandidos but not an outlaw biker. Back then it was just a bunch of WWII vets that loved to ride.

LOL. I've been around long enough that they didn't inspire me, I inspired them!!!! My father and his friends were my inspiration. My dad had Harleys before I was born and had them when he died at 86.

My father and "Dick the Bruiser" used to ride Harleys when I was a kidand they were big time tough guys, and Stephenwolf and Easy Rider and just growing up in the sixties, and yea,I related to the "Outlaw Bikers" and the vets coming back to the neighborhood more than I did to the "nice guys".

When I started riding most people thought you must be some kind of Outlaw if you were riding one of those damm motorcycles, and knew you one if you were one of those long hairs.

RE: who was inspired to ride harleys from outlaw bikers?

It started back in the 50.s when I would occasionally see a couple of guys and their old ladies returning from a run to god knows where. They were riding Electra Glides and seemed to be having a good time.

My father wouldn’t hear of me getting a bike and I was too busy with the Army and Vietnam right out of high school to give it much thought. Then, in 1971, I saw a movie called “On Any Sunday.” If you have never seen it you need to join Netflix and order it today.

RE: who was inspired to ride harleys from outlaw bikers?

I never "got it" when I was younger - I rode Jap bikes and loved the technical aspect.
63 cylinder nitrogen cooled 9 cam 127 valve 0-light speed in .00007 seconds flat.
I was repulsed by the slow, lumbering Harley's running around. They were few and far between, but they just did nothing for me.
Then I was downtown one day and about 5 bikers (not HA, maybe Outlaws). They made noise, the bikes leaked oil, they were hard starting (they were getting ready to leave our fine city).
1. They did not care who watched
2. They did not care about an oil leak
3. They did not care about how many kicks it took to get itgoing
4.They had EVERY chick onthe main drag watching..

NO ONE saw me on mySuzuki....

The more I watched this Harley-Davidson following thing going on, the more I realized - They were free!
MyJap riding friends thought a bike was a high miler with 20,000miles on it... These guys said it was "barely broken in" and I watchedand noticed many had 80,000+. They did not care about distance - gas, go, drink, camp, eat, drink, go, gas eat, drink, camp....
The UGLIER the biker, the nicer the babe...To this day I still can't figure that one out.

Anywhooooooo, by fate and friendship, I ended up much closer to the outlaw circle than I would have dreamed of. They did it their way and it was cool!

I am NOT an outlaw biker, but I still watch to see who travels through town and still know people who are "connected".

One look at me, and guys will do anything, even become "Outlaw bikers", just to avoid being associated with me. So, I'd say I have "sort" of inspired them. :D:D:D:D
Hurts my "feelings" at times, but I just git on my bike (see pic) and ride into the sunrise or sunset, oh, heck whatever they say.;););)

RE: who was inspired to ride harleys from outlaw bikers?

When I was younger I spent a few years in Alaska. Driving back down the Alcan highway we picked up some place in North Dakota. Low and behold we ended up going around Sturgis in process before I ever knew what it was. As a younger man poking my head out the rear window of a landcruiser and watching what appeared to be the worlds largest "Biker Gang" go by, I realized - I'd have a Harley some day.

Hit 30 and almost settled with a less expensive bike just to get on 2 wheels before my first kid was born. Glad I didn't compromise. My used Harley is still mostly everything I want in a motorcycle.

So sure, Outlawgroupsor just a bunch of folks at Sturgis had an impression on me to some degree.

Edit in - Used the "G" word. No offense and/or disrespect meant to current club members. As a child a bunch of bikers going by was a very cool experience, somewhat scary and intimidating also. We didn't see many clubs inparts of Alaska in the 80's. The "G" word was part of the mystique to the whole HD image. I will henceforth refer to large groupings of bikers as riders or clubs if applicable.

RE: who was inspired to ride harleys from outlaw bikers?

As best as I can rememberI was around 13 or 14. A couple of guys up the street had a 13 1/2 horse scooter called a Mustang. It wasn't like a Cushman or Vespa more like a mini Harley. Same lines just on a smaller scale. I can remember lusting after that bike but my parents would not allow me to have a motorcycle, could get hurt on it you know. So as far as the poll on this thread goes, none of the choices fit so I didn't vote.

Family tradition. Parents use to do the "gypsy tour" and the scrambles of the 50's-60's. When the hill climbs were at gunstock and you could camp along the road.Dad use to throw his bike in the back of the step van and let me sit on it and pretend I was driving it looking out the windshield when I was a wee lad. Even mom road a harley hummer(165CC?). I have inherited all the old AMA rally pins and what not from the '50's. Mydad had a bike right up till he passed away in 2002. I still have awsome 8mm footage of 1950's Laconia and the drag races and twin egine sportsters and triumphs.
