Flying in close formation with highly trained, well briefed professionals is very tasking, to say the least.
Riding in a formation with strangers, whose knowledge and abilities are unknown, and without a briefing is absurd.
Roo, I respect your show of restraint. Standing there being berated in front of your peers could not have been an easy thing to take.
No one deserves to be subjected to that.
My feeling is you should have sought him out in private, after the service, and explained to him the error of his ways.
That individual has a lot to learn.

I think you are doing a great thing, by showing how much America appreciates the families sacrifice. I think about joining the PGR, but I hate formation/ group riding. I saw a guy get hit from the rear in a poker run, once. It was a curvy road, one guy slowed down the guy behind was catching up.
You rode the way you felt comfortable, which is the right thing to do.
You, also, did the right thing by staying focused on your mission. The event was about your mission, not the ride.
It was more manly to be an adult and not same anything back tot he guy. He was the one acting like a child.

I've been on quite a few of these sad missions, and always had the good fortune of ride captains going over detailed briefings.....and, as you alluded, without a briefing the whole thing is likely to be a 'dust-up', (or worse).
Your restraint under the circumstances is quite commendable....you did exactly the right thing.....and the ride 'leader' violated a fundamental rule of leadership....and chances are most of his associates know him for what he is....someone who blames others for his lack of leadership skills. Such a man needlessly endangers others.

You did the right thing, no-one should should expect you to ride bar to bar unless your riding known roads slow or both lanes escorted. As for the leader 9and I use the term loosely) respect is not a Right, it needs to be Earned.

Geez, guys, you really are a bunch of overcarefull whimps. I've been to group rides with more then 500 outlaws. No briefing, just the usual rank imposed order. And guess what? We got where we wanted to go, no dead brothers, no horrible accidents, nothing. If you guys know how to ride, it's not a problem. Just pay attention to where you go and what the guy in front of you is doing, and you'll be fine. And if not... Hey, it's a dangerous world! Stop, for Pete's sake, to overanazlyze everything. Just enjoy the ride.

Yeah, OK, that's what I'm talkin' about. I felt like a wimp during the ride 'cause I was havin' so much trouble stayin' on the road what with two parade flags catchin' the wind and the shoulder of the road not actually bein' flat - it was a gator swamp. I shore do wish I had th' reflexes y'all possess. I been watchin' th' SOA and the way they drive and ya know what?
1. They ain't draggin' flags
2. They're drivin' into an ambush by those nasty Mayans
3. They actually make money sellin' guns to dope dealers.
4. Durin' the episode I watched, one of 'em fell and took out the whole formation.
And good fer you, bless yore little heart, fer makin' all them 500 bike rides without catchin a bug in yer nose or comin' down with th' gongareeah!
PS: What biker gang actually calls themselves "outlaws" (note lower case)? Like, "Hi, my name is DonkeyJaw and I'm with the MotherPluggers Motorcycle Club outa San Bernadino...we're outlaws! I also like cuddling and long walks on an abandoned beach."
