twin cam rebuild
I JUST FINISHED PUTTING 95 C.I. CYLINDERS, ANDREW 37B CAMS, KEITH BLACK 10.5 TO 1 PISTONS, AND PORTED POLISHED AND FLOWED HARELY DAVIDSON HEADS ON MY 2003 ROADKING. I DID THE WORK MYSELF, I DID NOT DO THE HEAD WORK, I SENT THOSE OFF. WHEN I STARTED IT UP IT CRANKS RIGHT AWAY, BUT IT DOES NOT SOUND RIGHT. I MAPPED THE CLOSEST MAP I COULD GET INTO MY POWER COMMANDER, I THEN SUBSTITUTED THAT WITH ANOTHER ONE THAT WAS CLOSE TO THE SAME MODIFICATIONS. THE BACK CYLINDER IS CHUGGING THE WAY YOU WOULD EXPECT A CAMMED UP MOTOR TO DO. BUT THE FRONT CYLINDER SEEMS TO BE RUNNING FASTER AND A SORT OF PECKING NOISE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST.I HAVE NO MOTOR KNOCKING NOISES AND NO LEAKS. I THEN MAPPED IN A ZERO MAP INTO THE POWER COMMANDER, IT DID NOT MAKE ALOT OF DIFFERNCE IN THE RUNNING OF THE ENGINE. IT SMELLS AND LOOKS LIKE IT IS RUNNING REALLY RICH, BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST WHEN YOU REV IT UP. IT DOES NOT SOUND TO BAD WHEN YOU REV THE ENGINE UP, ALTHOUGH I DON'T REV IT HARD, AM AFRAID TO UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES. ANYONE HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHAT I NEED TO LOOK AT?? PLANNED TO RIDE THIS TO MYRTLE BEACH IN A LITTLE OVER 3 WEEKS, NEED TO GET IT RESOLVED. I HAVE TRUE DUAL headers , DID AWAY WITH THE CROSSOVER PIPE AND HAVE KIRKER SLIP-ON MUFFLERS WITH TURNED DOWN END CAPS. HAVE HAD THE EXHAUST THIS WAY FOR OVER A YEAR BEFORE I DID THE RECENT MODIFICATIONS.I REINSTALLED THE STOCK PUSHRODS, I PUT THEM IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE THEY CAME FROM. THE HEADS ARE STOCK CLEARANCE, THEY WERE NOT SHAVED. NEW VALVES WERE INSTALLED WITH STOCK SPRINGS AND VITON SEALS AND NEW GUIDES. I USED THE 37B CAMS BEACUSE THE HEADS WERE NOT SET UP FOR HIGH LIFT, IF YOU GO OVER .510 LIKE THE 37B HAS THEN YOU NEED STRONGER SPRINGS. HAD THE HEADS FOR ABOUT A YEAR, DID NOT WANT TO INVEST IN NEW SPRINGS. TALKED TO SEVERAL OLD HARLEY MECHANICS AND THEY THOUGHT THE CAMS WOULD BE OK WITH 95 C.I AND 10.5 TO 1 PISTONS. I AM FAIRLY MECHANICAL BUT HAVE ONLY BEEN INSIDE A HARLEY ENGINE 1 TIME BEFORE, DID DO TOP END ON S&S 107 STROKER ENGINE ABOUT A YEAR AGO. I JUST DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO FIGURE OUT CAUSE AND EFFECT.

RE: twin cam rebuild
Well to start with did you rotate motor over and check for valve spring coil bind? Did you clay the pistons and check for valve to piston clearence? Not to dissapoint you but Andrews 37 cam is not meant for over 10 to 1 compression, it will detonate, they work best UNDER 10 to 1.
Not knowing how many corners were cut to save money it is hard to give advice. It is usually better to wait till you can afford to do it right than assemble a bunch of un-matched parts.

RE: twin cam rebuild
Hi jeepster,
Thank you for the response, I think I have a timing problem. I tried to align the cams right but I must have been a tooth or two off. Money was not an issue, never has been as far as my bikes go. I think the biggest thing that is causing problems is bad advice from people who are supposed to be in the know and my lack of knowledge. But I wanted to do it myself. So I will tear it back apart and go into the cam cover and realign those cams. Say you dont think the 37 b is big enough for the 10.5 pistons. Thanks,
Vthunder
