I think both of the drain plugs have allen head recess in them. If so most likely your HD "tool kit" would probably work for you, other wise a 5/8 socket and small ratchet should be fine.

Back in my younger days running around on our Shovel's think we would just add oil. Some times it was what ever oil we could get our hands on at that. haha! Pretty sure your bike will be fine for 6000 miles but 6001 and shes gana blow.

 

Reminds me of one of the guys who'd "catch the drippings" ( drippings like the Exxon Valdez ) and would put them back in the tank :>)

 

I was fixin to say the same damn thing....just find out yourself...since your so adamant on changing it on a trip yourself, try it before.

Didn't get one with my 14, man did I get qypped.

 

They still did not know how many coolant leaks were going to need a tool to repair.

I was recently faced with a very similar problem - when to change the engine oil and filter on my 2014 twin cooled Harley. I love the bike so I wanted to get it right. I paid to consult with expert V-twin design engineers. In fact, they had been in the business of V-twin engine design for over 100 years. What they told me was to change the oil and filter every 5000 miles if I don't ride in a lot of stop and go traffic. They also said to use 20-50W dino oil.

Do what you want, but if you would like to help me with the fees for the engineering expense I incurred I would be appreciative of it.
