Default 1986 FLT project

Went to look at a Chevrolet truck ( 4 door Colorado ) at a private residence and got a tour of his barn.In the coroner covered upthere was a 86 sportster and a two tone blue FLT. The bike is complete, has almost 100k on the speedo. Has been sitting for the last 6-7 years as the owner gave up riding. He would sell the FLT for a reasonable offer. I have no idea what it could be worth or what you could stick into it to have it road worthy. Can anyone give me a price range to work in ? It is a nice looking old bike that would make a great errand runner.

From Kelly's, retail value. Trade in is much lower.1986 Harley-Davidson FLTC Tour Glide 2-Cylinder
4-Stroke
1340cc
Suggested Retail Value $7345* The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the unit has been fully reconditioned and is in excellent condition. Mileage/condition and additional equipment may have a substantial impact on the value shown above. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the unit's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions.

If it looks decent and runs I'd give $6k for it.

FLTC's have an awesome ride. Lots of potential.

With a 100K on the clock I would be it needs rebuilt or has been rebuilt. As for siting 6-7 years, you are going to need: all new rubber, tires, hoses and so on. The carb will need rebuilt, motor will need some work most likely. The tanks are most likely rusted and would need replaced. I would offer a low number and leave yourself plenty of money to put into it.

I'd offer $4500 tops. Even if you dump $2-3k into it, not worth much more than $7k anyway, unless that one rare buying must have an '86 FLT.

If you're planning on keeping it and riding it, it might be a good investment at a good price - for resale, not so much.

I had trouble selling my very clean 80 FLT (see photo gallery). It was for sale9 months (Aug-May) asking $7K, finally received about $6600 in valuewith cash/2 trials bikes/Honda Foreman. Several deals fell through. The trouble with resale is lenders will not finance an older bike so the people looking at them usually don't have enough to buy something newer and you might have to sit on it for a while or finally take a trade to move it.

Just FYI. I bought my 88 FLHTC from a junkyard for $5k. It had 41k miles and had been dropped in a low speed crash. It had plastic damage to the inner and outer fairings, saddle bagsand tour pack and bars. I did all the work myself (except the paint) and I have a very nice, good looking, great running bike for a total of about $8k. I still need to replace some of the old rubber bits (front motor mount and bar snubbers) but I'd ride that damn thing across the country without hesitating.

So, my $0.02. If you can do the work yourself and all the pieces are there - or you are comfortable you can find them on fleabay/other sources - GO FOR IT! I love my scooter.
