Hayden M6 Destroyed.
1995 Road King I picked up a couple of weeks ago. Has 17,500 original miles on it. Pulled the outer primary today. From what I can tell it is/ was a M6 adjuster. There was a approximately 1 inch square by 3/16 chunk of aluminum laying in the bottom of primary. Looks like it might have had ears or something at one time. Which I guess was part of what was left of adjuster. I know a lot of people run the M6 with good results. I read good things about the Baker Attitude Adjuster. I think I am going back with the stock setup. Not a big fan of stuff in primary that comes apart. Nothing wrong with stock setup. Just need to check it at oil change time.

Put the Baker adjuster in and call it a day. I had the Hayden on my Dyna and switched it out for the Baker...noticed better shifts and it was quieter. |
Old I've got a 1/2 dozen trashed Hayden adjusters in my odds&ends boxes, those things have always been a gimmick far as I'm concerned. Get the spring tensioned enough it won't slap when you nail it or decel hard it wears the damn things out fast and they end up like you found it.
For those who want to know the aluminium part Old found is what you stuff up under the spring to tension it, they usually came several in a pack . |
Thanks, TB. I can always count on you for good info.:icon_toast:

The hayden adjuster is about as good as tits on a boar hog.. The stock adjuster on a 95 is fine, they've been around for 30 years at that time,,

Sounds like one of the shims that comes with the adjuster, p/o probably had it in front of him and didn't use it. I had to really work mine to get it in place, don't see how it could work its way out. Need a picture.....

Heard enough horror stories about the Hayden just decided to do my own adjusting and has worked just fine and usually don't even have to touch it ..

I'm a happy Hayden user with many years of riding with no problems, but we're slagging them off in here with little evidence of what has actually failed! So how about some photos of the worn parts, or simply move on and replace with the brand of your choice?
