Service manual-Primary Lube ?

In the service manual on page 1-15; #6 states Pour 38 oz through the clutch inspection cover opening. Part No. 99851-05 (quart).

My question is; do you use 38 oz or a quart? (32 oz)
This is for an 07 UC Thanks

if the manual says 38 then the answer is 38.

Duhh they buy book and then still ask?????
If the book which was written for and by Harley Davidson says 38 oz
then use 38oz.
32oz is 6 oz short, will it make a difference???? who knows!

Thanks jd, now looking at it again; I see that the manual is just stating the part number for "a quart"
Thanks.

The local dealer told my neighbor that 32oz was fine and that is what they usually do during a service if it is just a drain and fill.

My manual suggests an amount of lube but give instructions on checking the level.

From reading the service manual for my 04 RK, and it says basically the same thing, I interpret that it means "Use 38 ounces of this fluid, which is part # xxxxxxx for quart bottles and part #xxxxxx for gallon bottles."

I think 38oz. is capacity. I don't think you can get all 38 oz. out just draining. If you had to remove the primary cover for any reason then you would need the full 38 oz.

BINGO!

Takes about 32 oz when you change it.

Not true, the manual states to add 45 oz. any time you remove the primary cover, add 38 if its only a change. I change my oil just yesterday and it took 38 oz just fine. Matter of fact i did it twice yesterday. Dont ask me why. (Beer is wonderful) lol

0688"owners manual says drain and fill with 32oz. primary oil, and
warns against overfilling. Why is there a debate over this, didn't
anyone get a simple owners manual with their 20K bike?
Could be the 96" primary holds more oil then the 88", not owning one,
I wouldn't know.

All you got to do is look at the measurements on the side of the bottle. Put 1 quart in with a funnel and put 6 oz out of another bottle. Look at the bottom of the primary there is a circle cut out so the oil can go in easier.
I don't understand if the manual says to put 38 oz in that you would want to put less in. The level comes up to about the bottom of the clutch pack. The primary oil lubricated the primary chain, the tensioner, the clutch pack and sprockets etc.
Put the bike on a jack and make it level but so you can git the drain plug out. Take the derby cover off and look inside at the oil level.

My '08 took 38 oz. Put in 32 oz first and checked. It was too low so, I added the 6 additional ounces and the level was right where it was before the change.

Just did this on Sunday. It took 38oz just like the manual says. 45oz for a dry fill---ie--if you take the primary cover off and remove the clutch.

One thing I would add to this is not to do it in the order that the manual says. First remove the derby cover, THEN the drain plug. That ensures that you don't drain the primary and then have trouble getting the derby cover off. This results in a primary with no oil and no way to easily fill it back up. Ask me how I know this??? :-)
