Default NY Finger Lakes Area

I'm going to be taking a trip to see the Finger Lakes area of New York in a month. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on scenic roads, places to stay, things to see etc.

Thanks for any input you can offer.

Seneca has the Falls & there's a lot of good wineries around Geneva on the Lake
Watkins Glenn's got a bunch of waterfalls

If you stray East.. there's Cooperstown with the Baseball Hall of Fame
(Watch I 88 East of Oneonta.. it's been redone after the major rains a couple years ago.. it's mostly rain grooved) there's also an Indian Reservation over that way with a Casino)

Went up that way last year for the Ny State Harley Rally - beautiful riding!

Watkins Glen is a nice stop and then you can go north up Rt 14 to Geneva. The Ramada is at the end of the lake (Nice Place to stay) Take Rt 5&20 west to Canandaigua stop down town lots of places to eat. Then take Rt 21 or my choice would be Parish St to west Lake Rd out of Canandaigua south as far as you can and then pick up Rt. 21 south and this will take you to Naples (Wine Country) this is a ride I take this several times a year. Lots of mountains and lakes! There is a Harley dealer a Rt 5 & 20 in Geneva if you need anything. Watkins Glen to Geneva about 50min, Geneva to Canandaigua 30min, Canandaigua to Naples 45min. This will give you an idea of time. If your up here for a few days a nice ride would be to go to Alex Bay for a night. Geneva take Rt. 14 north to Rt. 104 east go thru Oswego and pick up 104 B turns into Rt 3 and stay on it all the way. Geneva to A Bay 3 hours. Lots of places to stop along the way, Sackets Harbor, Cape Vincent, Clayton, At Cape Vincent you can get a ferry to wolf Island and then another ferry toCananda (Kingston) Great trip!!! Cape Vincent to kingston by ferrys about 2 hours with the waits to load your bike. Take a buss tour of the city.Kingston is lots of fun, Street side pubs, shops, water front will need a pass port or girth cert.
I could go on and on. Good luck, Pm me or e-mail meif you have questions. Steve

The Finger Lake region is a nice place to ride; I would like to go back there this summer (we lived in Ithaca for seven years). Srawden gives a good route, I think, although I've never done all of it. I think just riding around all of the lakes will give you a nice, but long, trip. Try to take in Taughannock Falls, west of Cayuga Lake slightly North of Ithaca, ("the highest falls West of the Mississippi and North of North Carolina", or something like that). There are several nice wineries West of Ithaca alongside their lakes; and they offer free tastings; but of course I'm not suggesting you drink and ride.

Check out Letchworth State Park. They like to refer to themselves as the "Grand Canyon of the East". I'm not sure that I would go that far; but, it is a beautiful ride through the park and the falls can be amazing, especially if there has been enough rain. Here is a link for the park: http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=12.

I have lived in the Western Fingerlakes as long as I can remember. If you give us a little more detail on where you are landing, and if you are planning day trips out, or will be staying at different locations during your trip.

As all have said, the finger lakes will offer you almost anything that you want to see, and even some things that you don't want to see.If you were to have a central location at either end of Seneca Lake, ( Geneva to the N. and Watkins Glenn S.) you can do several different day rides that will take you through out all kinds of terrain.

As such, you can choose to be further E and stay on Cayuga lake, ( Ithaca on the S. and either Seneca Falls or Auburn on the N. I would choose Seneca Falls/Waterloo area vs Auburn.

How many days will you have in the area? I can help a little more if you give a grief description of what you would like to see while in the area.
