Smoking Regulator/Rectifier!

Smoking Regulator/Rectifier!
I have a 93 Electra Glide Ultra, with a 99 Softail motor.
Today, a few miles to my house, I smelled something terrible. My regulator/rectifier (finned box behind the front fender) was smoking!
I made it home...
My volt meter (in the dash) says 11 v... it should be 12 when it's running, right? If my regulator is dead, am I running off the battery as I drive?
Will this affect my stator?
Should I replace the regulator with a '99 (motor is a 99) or a 93?
Thanks everyone!

Is this something that started after the engine change or has been working until today?
If the amperage changed between 93 & 99 then the regulators may be different. Softail does not have the use the same amout of amps as the Ultra.
Check the stator to see if it is charging before just changing parts. Probably is the regulator but it is better to know rather than spend money on something you don't need.
Running off the battery will not harm anything other than draining the battery.

Thanks for the reply.
After a ton of research, it seems the regulator for the 99 and the 93 is the same. I picked up a new regulator, I'm going to install it now and hope thats the problem.
I could be the stator, but the regulator was literally smoking and it's pretty obviously toasted!
(this is something that happened recently, but I've only had the bike for a few miles so I'm really not sure of the origins and all that)
