Exclamation Starter Noise, Radio Problem

Every onc e in a while the starter sounds like it is grinding to death.

The power on the bike completely drops out. Wait a sec.. try again and works fine.

Took it to HD,

Everytime I mention it, they give me the PC5 comment, or too much modifications done to the electrical system. (added a radar detector that is switched off when this happens).

Even though this issue has been happening before any mods.

Plus.. I wonder if this is electrical on my problem.

The radio resets everytime i start the bike.

Any input would be appreciated

I would take it somewhere else....Min is a 07 in the dealer right now...smae grinding noise...changed the starter, exhaust bracket(for better ground) ran a new ground wire....finally they are changing the compensator sprocket, they say with 43k miles it may be weak and causing the starter to not engage properly and slipping on the gears, thus cusing that grinding sound...embarassing...mine only didi it when it was hot except for a few times ikt did it at cold starts.

Total Bullshit what the Dealer told you about the PC 5 ..loose or dirty cables to battery or starter, loose starter are a few places to start to look..Harley has a problem with starter issues and does not really want to admit it..I know this because I have been there..find another dealer if it is under warranty..

The trick is having the starter do the damn noise in front of a HD service manager...that is finally how i got mine to get some attention.

Is the starter acting up only when the bike is hot?

Depending on the year of your bike, do a search of DAWG's posts...He has put of the SB on the starter a few times...Thought I had it saved, but can't find it right now..

You know i think the starters are the same because they tried a 09 Police 103 on my 07 to test it....I feel the compensator is the issue, well i will know after this week...At first my biggest issue was the knocking noise at take off...told one dealer about it and they said that it was in a lot of bike and MOCO wasn't recognizing it because it was too prevelant...some have problems in the clutch basket, others have grounding issues??? They know they have a problem but they are banking on it not coming up during warranty period so they can make money on the repairs...I paid $960.00 for my 2 year warranty last year and with all this work and the feul sending unit giving out i have gotten my moneys worth out if it in the past 3 weeks.

As many are finding out, the stock compensator is JUNK! Even after a new starter, my bike still made the clunking and grinding noise. It wasn't until I put on the SE compensator did the bike start right and has ever since. The MOCO won't own up to this problem and WE have to pay out of our own pocket to fix this, BS!
