I have a 2000 Ultra Classic and same thing happen to me. I was on a run and I went to shift and found the lever on the floor board. I tightened it up, and a year later I had the same thing. When I made it home I put blue locktite on it. No problem since.
Thanks Boogaloodude!
I'm just getting ready for a 1600 mile ride through Utah, and this is a great idea to take care of before I leave!
this is exactly why i always carry tie wraps with me if you break the linkage a ty wrap or cable tie works great at holding them together in fact i rode a hole season with a tie wrap instead of a helm joint.
I've read where several people take the allen head bolt out and replace it with a regular hex head bolt.
Mine on my '02 EG is loose & i checked it with a allen wrench. I plan on swapping it out with a hex head, a drop of blue locktite, & torquing it. We'll see how it goes...
I put up a thread on this a week ago, took advice from a post and took a mini grinder and opened up the space where metal meets metal. Then replaced the alen screw with a stainless steel, for strenth and to be able to torqe it more, hex head.Used 1/4 inch longer screw, and lock tight. Was going to put a lock washer on also but I forgot, was already back together.Tighted the snot out of that bolt, worked out good,I'll know for sure a few hundred miles from now.

For your future info Stainless is weaker then a regular steel bolt.

What part of "it's not the shifter rod" didn't you understand?
