2002 Road King Upgrade to 2009 SG Rim + Elite 3 Tires
I just completed this upgrade this last weekend, and I thought I'd post my first impressions:
First off, here is a pic. It's a cell phone picture. Sorry the bike is so dirty, I plan on cleaning it up really good this week some time.
On the rear I have a 16" rim off of a 2006 FLHX with a Dunlop Elite 3 MU90B16 Tire. I really considered the 160, but opted not to because of how much this project has cost already. On the front, I have a stock HD Tire on a 2009 SG Rim. This tire only had 3000 miles on it, so it will likely need to be replaced at about the same time as the new Elite 3.
Right off, I could feel that the new wheel/tire combo was more eager to enter corners. I was a bit surprised on my first on-ramp, but since then I am quite pleased. It was 107 degrees the day I picked it up from the shop, and the tar snakes on the road were very soft, I could tell that the front tire was much more apt to follow them than the new elite 3, which was a big change from my Stock FLHR White-walls that I had before. The ride is much more smooth, definitely a noticable difference there. I didn't really believe folks when they said that their bike felt like a new bike when they upgraded to Elite 3's but I'm sold on it now, my bike definitely feels different even only upgrading the back tire.
Still a lot to do looks-wise to the bike before I have it where I want it, but thats going to have to wait probably until early next year at the least. In the mean time, I want to remove the chrome from the front and rear fenders, and do something temporary to cover the holes. I'll get them welded and sanded next year, but for now I'm going to use auto-body plugs to plug the holes, I found some plugs at the local hardware store that are very flat on top, and very small to just cover the small holes in the front fender where the lower skirting, and the trim are mounted. I think I'll leave the "Road King" badge, but the rest has to go, These rims look really good with the clean fender look.
These were effectively the last of my "Winter Upgrades" which ended up being:
1. Windshield
2. Highway Pegs
3. Sundowner seat
4. Rider backrest
5. Heritage bars
6. Iso Grips
7. 2009 Street Glide front Rim
8. 2006 Street Glide back Rim
9. Elite 3's (only rear for now heh)
Thanks for all of your posts on the different Rim Upgrade threads that I searched to get the information I was looking for, and the previous reviews I read on the Elite 3's were very helpful too.
