getting a cam, break it in then tune it, or tune it?
 

Like the long title says, I am getting a cam installed. Do I get it tuned immediately? Or put some break in miles on it, then to the dyno?
It is an 07 Ultra, with 58k. I am going with the S&S 551 easystart cam. I have a map from Fuel Moto that should be close, but I will want it tuned.

Since you're not changing out pistons, cylinders or heads, I'd say once the cams are in, tune it straight away. I did cams and new cylinders/pistons at the same time, and I have noticed that it didn't really wake up until I put some miles on it to seat the rings. I used a canned map from Fuel Moto as well and it's been just fine by me, but I might spring for a dyno run eventually.

Nothing to break in. Just tune it.

break in is mainly to seat the rings. You should be good with only a cam change.

how hard is it to change a cam? thinnking about doing it on my 08FLHP

It's a job easily handled by someone with a little experience. Even someone who has not worked on cars or bikes in the past can do it, if they read the manual and take their time.

There's some good cams for your bike, which ones are you considering?


And to the OP, as has been said, nothing to break in... go get it tuned.

You break in a cam immediately after cranking it by running it at 1500-2500 RPM's in neutral for about 20 minutes.

Cool, I have the book and have been known to be somewhat dangerous with a wrench. SE-255's seem to be the popular choice
