Default Still on the fence

Starting to think I should go with just the woods 555 cam for now? The cost for the 106" with cams is just too much right now. Hope I will be happy with just cam? Can always add BB later right?

I put the S&S 551 ez start in my 07 UC. It was a very good boost. Wear out the pistons you have before you replace them.

Do you have a dyno chart on your setup? Do you feel any of the wavy torque curve revealed in S&S's dyno charts?

Well I started out with just the cams in my 96" it helped but it still was lacking. So I ended up having the 103 big bore installed and now that made the big difference. I am getting the grunt force that I was looking for, I am not into speed but with this beast of a bike I needed some added umph. You can read below the numbers that I got with the this setup.......................

Depends what power you are looking for... If you go with just cams, you won't have the torque that you get with the 106", however your hp curve will be better. As you increase ci's, you need to feed those ci's with more air. I have 583 cams with the 106" kit and before I had head work done, my hp would start to decrease after 3500 rpm due to not enough air getting to the engine. Torque was 106 ft lbs, hp was 89. If you are looking for quicker rpms, just do the cam. If you want torque, go with both. If you want to build an absolute machine, get your heads done. Pretty simple.

What constitutes "enough power" varies greatly from person to person. I added 255 cams to my TC96 with Fuel Moto Power Package (Stage 1) and that was enough for me. I would try adding cams only and if you want more you can always increase displacement and/or compression, but if you stay with stock compression beware that most performance cams will hurt your low-end torque. Only a handful will retain or enhance torque below 2500 rpms, and with those few the compromise is less improvement on the top-end, so you'll need to decide which is most important to you.

I have not dyno'd with the cam. I went with a map from FuelMoto. My plugs look good and it pulls hard. It is better at the bottom than at the top. It works well for my riding.

I wrestled with this same question last winter. I ended up doing a SE255 cam and the S+S 106 kit. Unfortunately, I had to tear it all out to repair the crank this year! Yep, the crank scissored and the cylinder to piston clearance was way out of spec! What caused all of this is still undecided. Oh, I had about 7,000 on the 106 kit. There are other people that I know that had to remove their 106 kits. They also developed excessive clearance between the pistons and cylinders.

Don't get me wrong, I like S+S stuff, but right now I got a bad taste in my mouth with them. Presently I am having the stock cylinders punched out to a 103.

Good luck in your decision.

I have the S&S 106 with 585 cams, local headwork, and am very pleased with the result. Little over 5000 miles with the change and no problems at all. I diffently do it all again. Fuel mileage went down to about 40mpg, small price to pay.

The place I was looking at having the S & S 106" kit, cam , and tune done is charging $2600, but now I found a 107" kit from FuelMotoUSA which includes the same for $1995. Is one kit better than the other? The more expensive quote includes winter storage, compression releases and is 1-1/2 hours closer.

Quick Reply: New cam only or both 106" and cam ?
