Route 16 VA-WV road condition and ride report
I asked the board about road conditions on Route 16 through Virginia and West Virginia in this thread: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...va-and-wv.html Thanks to all who replied!
We rode North on route 16 October 22nd & 23rd with the exception of the section between Mullens and Sophia, WV. It was dark when we got to this area and took WV highway 54 at the suggestion of a local fellow rider.
The pavement condition was prolly an 8 on a 10 scale or thereabouts, as far as a secondary road compares to Interstate and US routes. Parts of the Southbound route did not appear to be as smooth as the Northbound.
What an awesome ride on the mountain twisties! The fall colors were close to peak. Some of the curves required pulling in the clutch while in first gear as to not hit them too hot while being fully loaded for the road trip. Some sections did not allow much sight seeing as my concentration was fixed on keeping out of the woods instead of looking at them!
I would highly recommend Route 16 to anyone who is not in a hurry while traveling in Virginia and West Virginia, especially if you like two lane mountain roads.
BTW-We did not have any problems with coal trucks or banjo music! Although there was one really close call when some idiot just had to pass three cars and our three bikes who were running the speed limit and nearly ran off the road to avoid a head on collision.
