Default Cracked Swingarm (2000MY)

I'm new to motorcycles - Just bought my first bike a few weeks ago. Not even licensed yet.

It's a used 2000MY FLHTPI. It had a flat tire on rear so I took it off to replace the tire. In the process, I noticed the left side of the swingarm is cracked clean through, right at the axle position.

Is this common? Based on Clymer manual, I see that the 99-01 have same design, but a different swingarm was introduced in 2002+. It appears to be a better design.

Do I have any options (to replacing it with a new 2000 swingarm at $400+): can it be welded? Where is best site to find a used replacement? Is it possible to use the 02 design on my 2000?

I guess I'm glad it had the flat otherwise I would have ridden it with the problem -- not sure what would have happened, but I don't want to imagine.

Thanks in advance for any help and recommendations.

Dave.

You're lucky too have found it this way! I would much prefer a new swigarm to a welded one. I'm sure your safety, and anyone you put on the back, is worth more than $400.oo!

Dave, can you post a pic of the break? I would be interested to see just exactly where it is broke.

I'd have the thing welded. In fact I'd do it myself. Of course I'm handy..

wvrider,
I just joined forum today and haven't posted any pictures before. I assume I use the "embed picture in post" at the bottom of this reply screen. I will have access to my digital camera on Monday night and will try it then.

It is exactly at the point on the swing arm where the axle hole is. I suppose it broke there since it's probably the weekest point.

Does anyone know if I can use the 2002 swing arm (does it fit)? It appears to be a stronger design.

I believe that they also started using a larger diameter rear axel in 2002. While it's procably possible to convert the 2002+ style arm/axel/shocks/caliper mount/etc., it would probably be pricey. However, you may be ab le to find a 2002+ bagger in a salvage yard that is not damaged in the rear and buy stuff off of it.....

I would not be afraid to have someone that knows what they are doing weld up the original as long as you can ensure that it's "square". I'd also want ot make sure that is not another break or weak spot that resulted from flexing. Well.... maybe a new one does sound better...???...

Check Zanotti HD for 20~ 22% discount off retail. On a $400 ticket, that makes a big difference!

I would weld a collar around it. But ya know, if you have the bucks... I'd probably just buy another one or get a used one from a salvage yard. Why take chances right?
