ULTRA VS RG for long distance touring?
#11
I was told that there would not be a 2010 RG so I got a 2010 Ultra. I had tested a 09 RG at Rapid City. It was great in the wind. Then out comes the 2011 RG with full touriing bags and trunk with the 103" motor. Crap.
I've put 10k touring the Ultra which does the job well but when it comes to strong winds the RG excels.
A few times on the open road this past season the loaded down Ultra shook it's head a few times. Never serious, but I could do without it.

I've only test ridden both; but I found the placement of the EG's fairing visually confining (from the seat position). I like that the RG's fairing is placed further away from me, giving an illusion of a much bigger bike. Pretty subjective, I know...
If you've been riding a RG for some time now, I'd suggest sticking with the newer RGU.

1. Turn your Road Glide into an Ultra. (Like I did with my '09) lol
2. Get a 2011 Road Glide Ultra

After doing an Iron Butt Ride and several 500+ mile rides last year on my Ultra (all of them in some sort of wind and/or weather), and having ridden other big fairing cruisers (non-HD) over the last 20+ years....I would say I would choose the Ultra over the RG due to the better coverage overall by the batwing. Also understand that where I ride...we have learned to deal with the wind as a matter of everyday life.
When I solo, I can use a shorter shield if I want or when I go 2-up...put on a taller shield. Easily done in less than 5 minutes. I would suspect it is just as easy to change shields on the RG.
Just my $0.02

Since I turned my batwing into a RG last winter I have to say that I'm impressed with the ride & handling of the RG. As others have said they're both great since I've put 500+ mile days on both, the thing most don't talk about is how much more aerodynamic the RG is. I've found that fuel mileage is at least 2mpg better than the batwing depending on how much wind you're riding into. I feel that I have a better comparison since that was the only change made to the bike. It all boils down to which you like best as there isn't enough difference that it's a game changer, although it seems like you don't see very many RG owners switch to a batwing, I know I won't.

I don't brag about "Iron Butt Awards", like some. I don't need no Award to testify. I just say, "Can you keep up with me?"
