Default 23T compensator

Hi All,

After some great advice from GRBROWN, I intended to order my 23 tooth compensator sprocket, for my 2006 Ultra 88CI, last week.

However,............. with the weather being BELOW ZERO, I haven't been motivated and/or in a big rush.

A question or 2 first:

1. Is Baker the only/best kit to buy ??

Dealer wants $336 for the kit. I found it at MAW online for $293.

23T SPRKT&CHAIN 85-06 FLT $293.57 FOR 85-06 FLT/FXR Mfg. #: 157-56S Our #: P 12120012 Vendor #: 1212-0012 23-tooth

Axiom cycles is $296.

Can I do better somewhere else,..and is Baker the only /best option ??

2, Can I do this fairly easily myself ?? Never really cracked into my scooter motor, but used to wrench years ago, and have the manual.

Dealer told me $650 for the whole job, indy said it takes 90 minutes.

As always ,..........thanks for the info !!

~Jay

And you should be able to do it yourself with the manual. Will take you longer than 90 minutes probably, but you'll save some cash.

Are you just changing the compensator sprocket? edit - Never mind, thought you were going to a 24 tooth, was going to say, order it from HD, no chain necessary. Guess that's what I get for sped redding.

Going with the 23T. Says on the Baker site, that it adds 9% more torque. Exactly what I'm looking for. It'll be nice to kick the RPMs up a couple of notches.

Just didn't know if another vendor had any kits available. They sure are EXPEN$IVE from Baker !!

Just the 24T made quite a difference on my old '05. The 23 should be fun!

GP, have you considered installing the comp sprocket/clutch shell (same chain) used on '99-'01 EFI Touring models that yields a 3.37:1 ratio compared to the 3.42:1 ratio of the Baker conversion: Here are the p/n's and prices from a previus thread:

The part numbers are 37846-99A Clutch Shell and 40269-85A Compensator Sprocket. I got them from Zanotti and it ran $353.07.

https://www.zanottimotor.com/shopping/partLookUp.html

The 3.37:1 change has been very popular for '02 through '06 five-speed bikes, though that was before Baker's 23T and new chain kit came out about a year ago.

Good luck with your project. Changing the primary gearing is an excellent way to increase torque if you don't mind the increased rpms at highway speeds.

Check "Belt Drives Limited", I think they offer a similar product.
