Default 1000 mile service ?

I am far from having a 1000 miles on the SG since its still friggin winter here in Minne-froz-ta! Like i stated in the thread i started earlier "hard to find neutral" this is my first new bike, always owned used stuff before. I was wondering if it is critical to bring the bike in for the 1000 mile service. From what i understand, all they basically do is change the oil. I cant see paying a hundreds of dollars for a oil change! I'm quite competent mechanically and have worked on all my bikes in the past. Does not bringing it in to the dealer for the 1000 mile service void the warranty? I figured i'd change the oil myself at 1000 miles and buy the oil at the dealership so that it is documented and then i'd probably bring it in for the 5000 mile service. any thoughts?

You say that you are mechanically competent... If that's the case, you have the time, and you don't mind doing the work yourself, then why would you ever take in for service?

Personally, I like to know all about my bike - and if anyone else works on it then that's out the window.

do all the services yourself if you are mechanically confident,
I have done all services on mine and am about out of warranty
and not as much as a hiccup yet. Buy yourself a manual and
follow the checklist, you will enjoy taking care of it yourself
and be confident it is done correctly.

Personally I think the 1k service shouldn't be skipped. They should change all 3 holes and also give the scooter a thorough inspection, hopefully catching things that weren't done at the factory.
I think a dealer charges more than a c-note...

Ive always done all my own services. Just did the 1K service on my new SG. They cant void your warranty for doing your own service, just get a service manual and do all the 1k checklist.

keep your reciets, althogh depending on wich type dealer u use u may still be in for a fight but...for what ya save in oil changes u could pay out of pocket for a major job every 3 years and still come out ahead,if u really want to save find a indy with a tire changer.dealer around 300 for a 180$ rear tire.

Just wondering if doing your own maintenance voids the warranty if anything major were to happen to the bike! Thats all

we have a different set up in england , the 1000 mile service is in with the bike price , the other services are paid for , about £250 a go or every year , and unless you have a proper garage receipt you will void the warranty , a good Indy will do but if you do the work yourself , your bolloxed when the bike dies on ye , I'm not spending £12000 on a bike and skimping £250 a year on the service , that doesn't make sense to me , plus when you come to sell it , you will get a lot more if you have a fsh , over here a dealer will be hard pushed to take it in px without one ,or will give you a very low price for it , good luck , i hope it works out for you .

Only if the failure can be attributed to something you did, or didn't, do.

$60 service manual + $60 oil + $12 filter = self satisfaction the bike's properly serviced. Just get some decent oil in the tranny (Spectro 6-speed) & adjust the clutch to spec & you're good. Hope your winter ends soon!
