Oops that suck, guess this is a gooed excuse to go 103.

I have read up on the 555 a lot, it's a logical choice but it comes on just a little too late for the way I ride. I'm typically running between 2500 and 2700 RPMs most of the time. Most of the reviews I have read of actual riders has that cam coming on at 2800 RPMs. A couple of guys even went back to the SE255s after trying the Wood 555. I don't know much about the Andrews 54.
If you're changing pistons and jugs, you're not tied into the stock compression, and by bumping up your compression a bit, you open the door to a bunch of cams that will really wake your bike up.

If I recall correctly, there's been a couple of guys with stock 96 bikes that tried the 555, then went back to the 255. Maybe a couple with the 103 bikes, as well. Set up the 555 correctly, (10 to 10.2 compression), and they would have been much happier. A stock 96 at about 9.2 compression needs something a little shorter, with earlier valve timing.

I bought my SG new with the 103 kit in it. The tuner at the dealer had never tuned a tbw bike before and he couldn't get it right.
I took it to another dealer about 90 miles away who had a builder with a great reputation. I wanted the tune and asked him what else I could do without spending a huge amount of money.
He suggested SE heads and forged, domed, 10.5:1 pistons. He didn't think the 255 cams would work out very well, but said we could try it and go into the bottem end later if I wasn't happy.
It turned out great. With manual cr's and the SE compensator sprocket, and heavy duty starter, I don't have any hard start issues anymore. I have ridden this build about 18,000 miles so far.
The low end is great. I cruise at 2,800 to 3,000 rpms and I don't have to downshift to pass most anything I roll up on. Open the throttle at that rpm in 5th gear and I'll be at 90 mph by the time I am back in the right lane.

FX4,
I am not a tuner, don't claim to be. I will warn you hard starts were a bit of a pia until i finally found a tuner that set the start-up timing and cranking fuel correct.
I have read countless posts talking about detonation issues with these cams and this compression. I haven't noticed any detonation, but I am told it could be happening without me hearing it.
I hope that is not the case and have no reason to believe it might be.
Good luck with your new build, but I would not shy away from the higher compression with 255 cams from my experience so far.
