I basically did the same upgrade from biketronics using hogtunes speakers. I put the smooth side of the grill out, seemed to work fine. Nice pics of the install.

I have heard that the radio doesn't do well in rain, even though it's a "marine" radio. Anyone experience any issues? MY HK just went up today and I"m not buying a new one.

As long as you don't spray water directly at it, or let it sit in a downpour, you should be fine. I have the biketronics plexiglass cover that I put over my Alpine whenever I wash the bike, or if I get caught in the rain. A rain shower is fine, a major thunderstorm might be an issue. Just cover it and you are fine.

Any radio that can't handle being caught in a major downpour would never make it here in Florida! Many times I've been forced to have another beer waiting for yet another rainy season monsoon to pass, the HK hasn't had a problem. I would actually like an aftermarket head unit that accepted a flashdrive, but it absolutely would need to be waterproof, or at least have a waterproof cover.

The Sony units with the "tunetray" hide the ipod (or other device I assume) behind the faceplate. My Alpine has the USB output on the rear, real easy to run the cable to wherever you like.

Being a marine head unit the first time I washed it after the install I used no caution in getting it wet. Big mistake. It acted real squirrly for several days until it dried. After it dried all was fine. But I make sure to cover it when washing now. Gotta get around to ordering one of those Biketronics shields one of these days.

Thanks!!! I was actually gonna get one and paint it black. Use it as rain protection and sort of a security measure. To those not in the know they won't know there is a stereo under there. Keep me from taking the face off and ipod out when going into a store or something.
