prices are also very dependent on where you are located. I know here in the southeast harley big twins do not hold their value as good. When I sold my 2000 fatboy I took a beating on it but at the time there was an '01 FB with less miles and less stuff for the same price and a '00 road king for the same price. I searched hard and long and found what I wanted a '07 road king custom $11500 with 16k miles and some add ons. I know there was a '09 road king classic here with low miles for $13500 that looked very nice.
I did not go to ebay at all but I used craigslist and I searched different cities. I live near Knoxville, TN so Atlanta, Nashville, Cincinnati and Charlotte are all about 4hrs from me. Dealerships selling used are always going to be higher and if don't feel comfortable with your abilities to inspect the bike I would pay to have a local shop check it out before you buy it. If the owner does not to allow that then walk away because he is probably hiding something. When I sold the FB I knew I took care of that bike and told him if he wanted to pay for it he could let the shop open it up and get a look. Good luck because I know it can be frustrating. I hope you find what you want.

I went through the same thing. 2 1/2 years ago, I was looking for a used Ultra. Everybody was asking crazy high prices that you would have to be on drugs to even consider paying. I kept watching Craigslist and eventually found 3 different bikes priced at what they were worth. I actually got the one I bought at what I thought was a good price.
There was a guy locally advertising an '02 model for 17K. It stayed on Craigslist for over a year. I'm sure he still has it

In Aug. 2009 I paid over $26,000 Cdn. out the door for a new Heritage Classic. This August on a spur of the moment purchase I gought a 2011 Ultra Classic with 5199 miles on it. security, heated grips, wheel option etc. for $19,995.00 US in NH. With taxes at home came to a total of about $23,000.00. An new 2013 Ultra Classic out the door here, with the same equipment as my 2011 is over $28,500.00. As you can see, there are deals out there .

I am in the automotive business, and I know nothing holds its value. But in looking or a used Harley, some people, and especially dealers want $1000 or maybe even $2000 less than a new bike for a bike that is 3 or 4 model years old. I just do not get it. NADA is out there for a reason, if it says your bike is worth $15000 and you want $18000, personally I think your crazy.
I have been looking for a bike for about 2 weeks, in the off season and I am amazed at the people I talk too. I am down right getting frustrated to be honest.
I cannot justify paying someone more money than what it is worth. Am I wrong? I mean if I have to unload it for any reason, and sell to a dealer, I am not going to loose $3-5000 on a used bike.
Is it just about being patient or what? And when you put all this chrome and stuff on it, that is what you wanted, maybe not what the next person wanted. You cant expect to get it back. There is a local guy selling a used 2002 road king for $18k, they sell use 2012's for that! I see a used road glide at a dealer, for $18k, a 2011 with 9k miles, but then there is private party selling a used 2010 with 18K miles and he wants $19K????
WTF am I missing here? Is everyone on stupid pills or what? I really want a bike, but I just cannot get this crap through my head. I really want a street glide or road glide, maybe a road king. My budget is $14K and a 2009 and some 2010's book at that price. Why is that people think $17k or $18k for a 4 or 5 year old bike is only $2-3k less than new? A 2009 bike is 5 model years old now that the 2013's are out.

Two weeks? You're really just getting started. I hunted for the right bike for a bit more than 2 years. Probably looked at several dozen before finding the one I was willing to buy. Got it for a price lower than NADA. It had 1340 miles on it.
Be patient, disciplined, and diligent. Use your time to learn more about the specifics of the bikes/models/years that do interest you. Your increased knowledge will always be a good investment of your time.
So yeah there are plenty of used bikes at crazy-high prices. Don't buy those! But there's nothing wrong with looking at lots and lots of used bikes. Once you get face-to-face with a seller, you may find they are willing to negotiate a great deal on their asking price.
Hope this helps,
