Build Thread: Cleaning up a 1978 FLH Electra Glide
#31
I put monotubes in my 2011 electra glide last year and I have the stock internals that I can send you. That would just leave the tubes. Shoot me a PM if you want them.

Cleaned up the trans today. Failed to take a before pic, but it was completely covered in crap. At a minimum, 15 cans of chain lube were sprayed on this bike without ever cleaning it.
This stuff from napa worked great. Used a paint brush with some parts cleaner solvent for the big stuff. Then simple green and a scotch pad to get closer. Then a steel wire brush and the napa stuff last. Made the aluminum look fresh like new.
Also found a crack in the top cover, there was a big goober of silicone over it until I scraped it off.

Nothing fun to report. Spent half of Saturday stripping the frame to prep for paint. Got it primed that evening, dried in the kitchen. Then got the belly painted this morning. The tractor supply stuff is great, but takes a long time to dry. Will flip it tomorrow and finish it up.
Finished cleaning the motor up. First noticed a little oil collection under the main seal at the stator. Will replace that.
Then popped the cam cover and saw a little damage. The previous owner mentioned having an issue with tearing up cams and lifters. The problem is still there. Maybe it was his pushrod adjustments or oil change habits. Either way, new cam and lifters are in order. That's a fun upgrade anyways.
Need something kicker friendly but adds some midrange torque for getting up to highway speed. Not looking for peak horsepower or anything. I had a v-thunder in my last shovel and it was a good cam, but was a bitch to kick.

Was pleased to see the breather area was cleaned up a little. The motor was supposedly split in 2000 in a complete rebuild. Seems good so far.
