As I read in another thread, this type of shock design/setup is fairly common and has been used for years by other manufacturers. One side controls the compression and the other side controls the return damping. The two sides can dominate different aspects of the suspension function with no swaying for the rider, due to the frame design. (Others better versed in this subject might weigh in.)

It's a very weird setup, but if you have factory air shocks these are a great upgrade.
