The MoCo installs shims (right from the factory) on 2008 "Touring" Models because they used the same 2000(02)-2007 wheel castings and bearing bore specifications as when they used the wider 1" ID x 21mm wide bearings, but was introducing the new thinner 25mm ID x 15mm wide bearings. So they installed a shim under the "Primary Side" bearing (Front-left, Rear-right...see the machined grooves) to "fill the void" so to speak, along with a longer center spacer sleeve. They redesigned the wheels in 2009 specifically for those 25mm ID bearings while changing sizes and drive systems.

Logic would lead you to believe that the shim would be 6mm (21mm -15mm), but it's not, because they also made other changes to the wheel/axle spacers at the same time. Also the Front and Rear shims are different sizes. That's why it says "Rear" as shown in the photo.

These are same type bearing shim/spacer (but come a few various sizes) that are used if applicable for installing a lot of the wheels from the "Parts and Accessory" Catalog. They make the wheel to be used with older bearings, but can be used also in most (not all) newer model 25mm bearing applications by using the shims and appropriate center spacer sleeve.

That's why they can list "years" in the "Fitment" section that you might not think is correct.

Also of possible interest this wheel is a more uncommon GLOSS Black "Airstrike" shown at the bottom

Photo shows an example of a SHIM being used to allow the use of 2008-later Touring 25mm axle/bearings/center spacer sleeve in a front wheel designed for the earlier bearings as HD did on originally equipped 2008 Touring Models.

Hello, is it possible to install on this same wheel(your airstrike photo) a 25mm ABS front wheel installation kit p# 41454-08b, and be install on 2017 roadglide special?
Based on the axle kit pictures, if I install the newer 25mm abs bearing kit on the same wheel, the wheel will have a void on the right side hub. This void, although it is not much(6mm), will not be a problem in the future? Dirt, debris and water collects in the void and eventually corrosion. 6mm is .236", almost a 1/4" void.

Thanks

The Right-side void is not an issue.

The spacer shim used on the Left-side is for Primary Bearing "Positioning" then the Right-side Bearing is "positioned" by the center spacer sleeve.

Installing that 16x3 front Airstrike using the 41454-08B ABS installation Kit on your 2017 RGS shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you use the correct #41900-08 center spacer sleeve and #43903-08 Shim from that kit and install the LF ABS as the first bearing.

Question for the Wheel spacer axle gurus. I have a 2016 NON-ABS Road KIng. I would like to install a 2004 9 spoke wheel. Can I use the same Axle inner and outer spacers that I have on my 2016 impeller wheel and just add Harley Davidson Front Wheel Bearing Shim, 43903-08 to make it work? Of course I would use new bearings.

Yep

Install the 43903-08 Shim under the "Primary Bearing" (LF) which is the first bearing installed.

Of course you'll also have to use 11.8" Hub Mounted Rotors (NOT from the Impellers) on that 9-Spoke "Wagon wheel"

.

Default Confused about bearing location

I have a 2012 softail slim. I changed the bearings and the brake caliper doesn’t line up. I just noticed the old left side wheel spacer is thinner than one that came in the replacemwnt kit. Do i need to use a spacer? (Bearing shim 53315-07)

Did you mean to say/write 43315-07?

Are you re-using your original Slim Wheel(s)?

If Original Wheels... you didn't have a Shim before and No Shim is used now. Also the outside wheel/axle spacers included in the kit wouldn't be used in your application

Did you install the 1st bearing on the brake rotor side and "bottom it out"

If they are different wheels, then more info is needed

.

Thanks. You have the correct part number. Mine was a typo. The wheel Spacer that came with the HD kit i brought was a different size than the one i took off. I had to pit the old one on like you said. Thanks again

Okay, getting my butt kicked with a front wheel install.... and much searching has led me here. I keep seeing MultiHDRDR seems to be the expert, SO....

2010 Dyna, FXDB, and swapping in a set of what I'm guessing are 06-07 mags(Switchblades).

Came across this....

Ordered the HD install kits. Test fit rear bearing stack in back before in the wheel... good to go.
set up and installed rear wheel.... money.

Test fit front bearing stack in fork... good to go...
install in wheel.. problem. The spacer is NOT touching the bearings, there is a gap. And it rattles. Did a fit up in the bike anyway, needed to shim the caliper over 7/64( 0.115"/3mm).

Ordered more bearings, pulled it apart, made sure nothing is messing with my depth on either side. Only the shim.

I'm questioning the shin size, as it seems, that since the stack fits right without the wheel, AND I had to shim the caliper over...

spacer came in @ 3.85"
shim came in 3/16(0.19"/5mm)

Do I have the wrong shim?

I'm going to hit a machine shop and see about having a shim made that is about 2mm. Unless there is something different. I was departing on having the hub machined... but, if a 1 inch bearing came out... it should be able to go back in.

EDIT, going through the boxes, I found another shim, it's a little under 2mm,
came out of either 43903-08-sub1
OR
41450-08-sub1

I'll try fitting it up with the smaller shim when k get back to the house.

Bought a couple extra sets of bearings(AllBalls) once I saw the gap in the spacer.

Thanks,
Chase

Little things can really cause problems ... Can't they

Dyna Front Shim is the 41450-08 (approx .067" (1.7mm))

Report back

EDIT: Place the Shim under the front Left (Rotor side) Bearing
