Subtle Updates

Working at Thunderbike Harley-Davidson might seem like a dream job. Most definitely not a sleepy vision, this 'barn find' 1956 FL is one of the more recent rides to receive the shop's touch. The vintage Milwaukee iron was treated to a subtle restoration, one that balances classic styling with a few contemporary updates.

Garage Institution

Located in the small German town of Hamminkeln, Thunderbike is a Harley-Davidson dealership, custom parts manufacturer and bike building shop all rolled into one. Now with about seventy employees, owner Andreas Bergerforth has steered the franchise for the past thirty years, from a fledgling enterprise building motorcycle parts in his mother's garage to the institution that it is today.

Everyday Look

Sticking to a level of authenticity was an important factor in the FL's makeover. Bergerforth acknowledged that he was not attempting a 'period-correct build, more so “It was to be a classic bobber with good suitability for everyday use.” Paramount to the approach was to retain a stock appearance while incorporating the look of the early post-war machines.

Precarious Angles

Dubbed 'Uncle Pan' for unknown reasons, the survivor FL looks like it rolled out of a time machine. Unlike some of today's cosmetic trends, bobbers were fashioned with racing practicality in mind—especially hill climbing. Notably, the rear fender's hinged portion was removed for better ground clearance when perched at precarious angles. Other modifications included chucking out heavy parts and raising the exhaust.

Enduring Years

Bergerforth refers to the FL as the “spirit of the old days.” The survivor holds an interesting historical significance given the German stamp on its passport. In 1956, America was enjoying prosperity and leisure activities like racing, which molded the enduring bobber look. Meanwhile, Europe was still rebuilding and clearing away the rubble from years of conflict.

Iconic Motor

There are no 'before' pictures of the bike's condition prior to being dragged to the Thunderbike shop. In a loose translation, Bergerforth implied that it was not a pretty picture. “The engine was running properly, but the surrounding was still extremely incongruous.” Upgrades to the iconic motor included a 38mm Dellorto carburetor and a set of Paughco pipes, sourced from Custom Chrome Europe.

Precision Landing

Among the crusty bits, the original saddlebag was still in remarkably good condition. Wanting to preserve as many parts as possible, Bergerforth retained Spirit Leather to fashion a new seat as a complement to the vintage bag. Known for their artistic approach and expert craftsmanship, the Meerbusch, Germany shop struck a chord between new and old. Bergerforth called it a “precision landing.”

Uncle Pan

The bodywork was finished by Ingo Kruse of Kruse Design, a master painter and Bergerforth's longtime friend. The tank was fitted with the original 'V' badges. Only appearing for two years from 1955-1956, the Victory badges have several interpretations. Unveiled at Jokerfest, Europe's equivalent of Sturgis, Uncle Pan is sure to keep its thunderous 'spirit' alive, however, that is defined.
