1990 FXRS Frame-Up Build is the Business
Daily Slideshow: “Wow, an FXR for the 21st century.” This documented frame-up build is one of the coolest we've seen.
Show & Go
“Here she is...I'm truly in LOVE with this bike,” commented H-D Forums member adamsrotors (Adam Woodhams) when he posted his completed frame-up 1990 FXRS build. Smitten might be the verb of choice for this Candy Ruby beauty. Beneath the good looks, the FXRS is all business — with a touch of danger. Here is a closer look at Adam's build and performance modifications.
Take Over
Every build has a starting point, and Adam's FXRS is no exception. H-D Forum member grbrown asked, “Is that your own build, or have you 'chanced' upon it?” The short answer is that the build was started by Pop's Garage Fabrication for a previous owner. Early in the process, Adam took over, and as he explained, “I changed a lot and finished it in my own needs and style.”

Power Factor
“It's almost scary,” responded Adam to RCermak's comment, “Looks like fun.” The fear factor is generated by an S&S 107 V-Series motor that puts out 104 horsepower, and 111 foot-pounds of torque at the wheel. An S&S carburetor feeds the fuel, while a polished SPF stainless exhaust performs venting duties. Power transfer is negotiated via a Barnett clutch and a Baker Overdrive 6-Speed transmission.

Custom Front
Getting the FXRS to bounce and stop right starts with a long list of parts. A complete Öhlins Dynamoto frontend was the definitive choice for handling. Kraus Motor Company machined aluminum triple trees lock the inverted frontend to the FXRS. To bring things to a standstill, Brembo Radial Monobloc calipers stuffed with Ferodo Sinter Grip Road ST brake pads squeeze three Braketech rotors — two in the front, one in the rear.

Rear Mods
Keeping the rear contact patch glued is a Trac Dynamics swingarm sprung on a set of Öhlins Piggyback shocks. To shut down rear wheel rotation, a Brembo rear master brake cylinder supplies juice to the single Brembo Radial Monobloc caliper. In response to questions about Zipper's Performance Chain Drive conversion, Adam rationalizes his preference as “torque, direct power... and it's just cooler.”

Taking Care of Business
Getting the job done behind the Memphis Shades Road Warrior fairing is a Big Al's mid-bend handlebar clamped to a set of Todd's Cycle eight-inch solid tube risers. Lever input is through Beringer brake and hydraulic clutch hand controls. Performance Machine grips flanked by Motogadget switches complete the input duties. A Koso digital gauge provides the necessary numbers.

Matching Upholstery
Creature comfort is supplied by Saddlemen two-up seat with custom gold stitching. Retro Leather Pros T-Sport saddlebags are topped with the same double diamond pattern as the seat. Keeping the rear end trim is a lay-down license plate peeking up from the rear fender. Carbon fiber side covers are bolted down with ARP fasteners.

Fun Loving
Adam's FXRS is a true frame-up build that started with fresh powder coat on the frame. Commenting on the end result, Adam emphatically stated: “It's the most fun of anything I've owned.” Bringing it back to a question of love, or at least the business of marriage, Elite HDF Member splattttttt summed it up best by saying “If I owned that bike before I met my wife, I’d still be single.”
