1. Handlebars

Considering the handlebars serve as a hub for many functions of the bike, it is no wonder many owners believe a pair of bars is the best modification done to a Dyna. The style, rise, and pull back of the bars will directly influence the rider's position and control of the bike, so swapping the stock bars is like getting the bike tailored to you. Not to mention, a sweet set of bars can really change the look of your Dyna as well. Whether you choose a set of ape hangars, drag bars, or some high rise T-bars, they definitely change the look and feel of your bike.

2 Seat

If you spend a significant amount of time on your bike, it is likely that your buns will ache from the rather uncomfortable seat. Although factory seats have significantly improved over the years, most agree that an expertly crafted aftermarket seat can do wonders for comfort levels. Additionally, seats can be made in different thicknesses to raise or lower the seat height, and can also include custom materials and designs for aesthetic purposes. Much like handlebars, a new seat can improve both the riding experience and the look of your Dyna.

3. Suspension

Some Dyna owners have stated that their bike was not complete until they took the plunge to upgrade the suspension. The stock forks and shocks are adequate for a variety of roads that one is bound to encounter, better handling and a more comfortable ride are possible with an investment in upgraded suspension. Simple replacement fork springs and improved rear shocks chosen specifically for the weight and riding style of the rider, can do wonders. Go with full-blown race-grade components from Ohlins and the like and get both show and go. Have a look at our Dyna Suspension Guides to choose the setup that is right for you.

4. Exhaust

Probably the first modification to any Harley-Davidson is a set of exhaust pipes. Whether opting for a set of slip-on mufflers or a full system, exhaust upgrades enhance engine sound, improve performance, and can alter the looks of the motorcycle. There are literally hundreds of exhaust options out there to allow owners to choose the perfect combination of aesthetics, noise, and performance to meet their desired tastes. If you are riding a Harley, it's gotta sound like a Harley, right?

5. Footboards

Many who have traveled on their Dyna find that the stock foot pegs become a bit uncomfortable because of their small size. For this reason, long distance Dynas can be seen fitted with touring style footboards that provide a platform to comfortably rest your feet while cruising. A number of different kits are available to position the footboards further forward and lower to the ground for extra leg room too. Similarly, there are mini boards that can be placed in the stock location but provide a beefier platform to rest the soles of your boots.

6. Fairing

One area lacking on Dyna models is wind protection, so it is understandable that owners have rated an aftermarket fairing as their best mod. A fairing provides some aerodynamic improvement and offers a level of protection to keep the wind, bugs, and small road debris out of your face. Fairings come in all shapes and sizes, from small ones to give your bike the "outlaw" look, to a full batwing fairing for ultimate protection.

7. Lighting

One modification to the Dyna that improves both rider safety and bike visibility is upgraded lighting. Huge lighting advancements have been made in the last few years, so it is no surprise people opt for high output LED bulbs for the turn signals, brake lights, and tail lights, which also use less power. An LED headlight may give you twice the light, while still being legal, and using 1/10th the power. Additionally, stop/turn/tail light kits and headlight/taillight modulators are a great way to catch the attention of other motorists. Overall, improved lighting gives you more light output to better see the road ahead and ensure you are seen by other motorists.

8. Air Intake

Next to exhaust, an aftermarket air cleaner kit is typically one of the first changes owners make to improve performance without getting into internal engine mods. The stock air cleaner is incredibly restrictive to meet strict noise standards, but the engine is a big air pump that will perform best with the least restrictions in its job. Air cleaner kits change the look of the bike, are easy to install, and provide a throaty sound that cannot be had with the stock setup. Check out some of the air intake kits available in our Harley Davidson Dyna Glide: Air Intake Reviews and How-to.

9. Brakes

A common gripe among Dyna riders is that the single front brake most of them come with lacks adequate stopping power. A quick and cheap improvement in the brake bite is a set of performance brake pads. For serious improvement, however, many opt for either an oversized big brake disc kit, or a dual disc set up. Unlike most performance improvements, money spent on better brakes can always be justified from a safety standpoint, even if you are just cruising the boulevards.
