Convoy of Harley Riders Transport Ashes of Iconic Motorhead Singer
A convoy of Harley riders recently gathered to transport the ashes of the iconic Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead.
Special Occasion
Among the many rock stars that we've lost in recent years, Motörhead legend, Lemmy Kilmister, is among the most iconic. Affectionately known by most of his fans as simply "Lemmy," the British musician passed away back in 2015 after a 55-year career that saw him become the founder, lead singer, primary songwriter, and bassist for the band, helping to usher in a new kind of metal with his distinct voice. As one might imagine, Lemmy is nothing less than an icon in his home, the UK, which is precisely why a group of Harley-Davidson riders formed a convoy recently for a very special occasion.
New Resting Place
The Nottingham Post was on hand to capture this special occasion as a specially-created memorial containing Lemmy's ashes made its way to its new resting place at the Home of Rock in Nottingham, which happens to be the same place Motorhead played at on 10 occasions between 1987 and 2006. There, it will remain on display before returning to the Derbyshire rock festival each year, where it appears annually.
Special Convoy
Of course, one can't just transport the ashes of a rock legend without a special tribute, and that was certainly the case here, as 55 Harley riders showed up with their bikes to help move Lemmy's remains. The event was also part of the 2024 Bloodstock Festival, meaning that directors Adam Gregory and Vicky Hungerford, along with Alan Hungerford - Lemmy’s personal assistant - were on hand, the latter of whom toured with Motörhead on several occasions.
New Home
“We are so excited that the Lemmy bust has arrived at its new home here at Rock City, and are honored that Bloodstock Festival chose our venue to host the bust here between his annual pilgrimage back to their event each year," said Rock City programmer Amy Lawson. "It seems fitting that a bust to celebrate such an iconic trailblazer in rock will stay in a venue that is tied so closely to his musical heritage. We can’t wait to welcome his legions of loyal fans to pay their respects to the icon.”
Welcoming Fans
“It’s been a very emotional weekend for all involved in the Lemmy forever tribute at Bloodstock, the send-off with 55 Harley Davidsons taking the bust to rock city in the Bloodstock truck was the finale to a superb weekend of tributes to our rock god Lem," added Vicky Hungerford. “The fact people can now see the bust and his ashes at the iconic rock city is superb and we cannot think of a better venue considering Motorhead played there numerous times! I’m sure many people will want to pay tribute over the coming months.”
Special Tribute
Aside from Bloodstock's display of Lemmy's bust, there was a special "Lemmy Forever" memorial that contained a recreation of the rocker's dressing room chock full of cool things like his signature hat, a pair of boots, a bass guitar, and a bevy of pictures and lyrics drawn and written by the man himself - making for one heck of a tribute.
