A Passion Realized Later in Life

Stephan, a project manager and electronics engineer from Hamburg, Germany, didn't begin his motorcycling journey until he was 34. Long fascinated by Harley-Davidson's iconic Milwaukee-built V-twin engines, Stephan’s first ride was a Harley-Davidson Sportster Forty-Eight. After some initial custom work on the Sportster, he moved on to a Softail Slim, which became a test bed for his growing interest in motorcycle customization. His passion for building bikes continued to evolve, culminating in the creation of a custom 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA Flathead bobber.

The Search for a Vintage Machine

Though Stephan’s early customization efforts were rewarding, his heart was set on creating something truly vintage. In pursuit of a more classic machine, he stumbled upon a 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA. This wartime motorcycle, though showing its age, offered the perfect base for his vision. Despite being over 70 years old and having issues with oil leaks, the WLA was just the challenge Stephan was looking for. He purchased the bike near Hamburg, fully aware that the journey ahead would test both his skills and determination.

A Comprehensive Overhaul Begins

Stephan wasted no time disassembling the WLA down to its bare frame, which was sent out to be sandblasted and powder-coated black. But after realizing how much satisfaction he derived from working on his machine, Stephan decided to do most of the work himself. He invested in tools such as a lathe, sandblaster, and even a kitchen oven for powder coating smaller parts. His dedication led to painstaking efforts to refurbish various components like the refurbished drum brakes, springer forks, and engine covers.

Upgrading and Modernizing the Build

Stephan didn’t just aim for restoration; he wanted to upgrade the WLA’s performance and functionality. To this end, he tackled the engine and transmission rebuilds, fitting new pistons and honing the bores. Mechanical challenges were handled in stride, and when parts weren’t available, Hr crafted replacements on his lathe. The engine was given fresh paint and polished for an immaculate look, while a modern Mikuni carburetor and Fairbanks Morse magneto ensured the vintage V-twin could perform at its best.

The Aesthetic Vision Takes Shape

A custom bobber-style seat was created by Spirit Leather, featuring premium brown leather and supported by springs for a classic yet comfortable ride. The fuel tank and rear fender were also overhauled, with Stephan opting to send the bodywork for a professional paint job. The result was a sleek flat black finish complemented by gold decals and bronze accents, including a beautifully ringed headlight. Stephan’s attention to detail ensured the bike's overall aesthetic was as impressive as its mechanical prowess.

A Few Final Touches

The bike also received a much-needed electrical upgrade, with Stephan converting the system to 12 volts and adding a modern generator, battery, and voltage regulator. A swingarm-mounted license plate holder, a circular LED taillight, and custom low-rise handlebars from Kustom Tech added the final touches. After 13 months of work, the bike was ready, passing the strict German TÜV inspection and officially hitting the road.

A Dream Realized

Riding his newly finished WLA for the first time was a moment Stephan would never forget. With support from his wife and daughter, Stephan found immense fulfillment in his custom motorcycle journey. His story serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to embrace new passions, and his bobber stands as a testament to craftsmanship, patience, and the joy of riding.
