Light and Tight

Unless something terrible happens, all motorcycle camping trips should be great ones. Those who have actually gone on bike camping trips know that every trip is one to learn from, and the first is usually far from perfect. One of the first things you'll notice, if you've tied everything up yourself and aren't using panniers, is locking everything in tightly is important. The last thing you want while cruising down the highway is something catching the wind - it makes the bike unstable and could lead to some of your kit coming off the bike. You'll also want to pack as lightly as possible because, once things start building up behind you, it can negatively affect your riding position - the last thing you want on a trip away.

The Division of Luggage

Apologies if these points seem obvious to those who are experienced in taking motorcycle trips but you'd be surprised how many people get it wrong. Firstly, the heaviest items go on the bottom. This helps keep the center of gravity low and means it's less likely your gear will go lopsided while riding. The next thing to make sure of is that the luggage weight is evenly distributed on both sides. Then, before you set off, make sure there are no dangling straps which could get caught in anything. Finally, pack smart, keep things together which will be used together. Camping gear and things which will only be used at the campsite should be kept together, while your phone, sunglasses, and wallet should be kept ready to hand in a tank bag.

Quality over Quantity

Quality camping gear is pretty important, there's really no getting around it. If you spend the money on it at the start, it should last you for a long time, and that's important if you plan to continue taking more camping trips. As with anything, if you spend the money at the start you'll save it in the long run. The benefits of buying quality camping equipment will be evident from the start of your trip. The first time you spend a windy, wet night under the stars, you'll be happy you spent a few extra dollars on your tent and sleeping bag.

The Right Clothes

If you're packing light, there's not going to be a whole lot of room for clothes, so, choose carefully. By the end of your trip, your clothes will be dirty, smelly and gradually become more uncomfortable to wear. Merino wool is, arguably, the best fabric to go for. Although it's a bit pricey, it helps prevent itchiness and is odor-resistant - two things you and your campmates will surely be glad of by the end of your trip.

Riding Gear

Picking the right riding gear for your journey can have a huge impact on your trip. If you'll be riding in colder weather, layering will be very important. Likewise, if you're going to be in blistering heat, having light, vented gear will be very important. Ideally, you'll have well-vented gear with a removable thermal lining - good for every situation. Although some riders detest the look, adventure riding gear is great for long distance riding and unpredictable weather. So, if you have a few different sets of riding gear, put some thought in or, if you've been thinking of upgrading, now might be the time.
