Touring Traction

The 2019 Tri Glide Ultra is the Motor Company's best trike to date. It is also the first Harley-Davidson to get traction control. Based on the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, the new Tri Glide Ultra is outfitted with all the best touring options, Harley-Davidson's biggest engine, linked brakes, and more than enough storage space to pack for those long haul cruises.

Classic Style

Harley-Davidson has been making three-wheeled vehicles since the early-1910s. Excluding sidecar derivatives, three-wheel designs have included the short-lived Motorcycle Truck and the long-standing Servi-Car. The Tri Glide Ultra Classic was introduced in 2009 — the 'Classic' badge was dropped in 2016. A Street Glide Trike was released in 2010 but is no longer in production. More recently, the stylish FLRT Freewheeler was revealed in 2015.

Lehman Deal

The Tri Glide Ultra's design history dates back to 2008. At the time, Harley-Davidson had a formal arrangement with Lehman Trikes of Spearfish, South Dakota, to supply parts and conversion services for Electra Glides. Originally based in Alberta, Canada, Lehman Trikes has been offering trike conversion kits since the early-1990s. Production of the Tri Glide was moved to the York, Pennsylvania plant in 2012.

Milwaukee-Eight Numbers

At the heart of the Tri Glide Ultra is the powerful Twin-cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114. First introduced in 2017, the ninth generation Big Twin features liquid-cooled cylinder heads, with four-valves per head. Loaded with passing power, Dyno numbers for the Milwaukee-Eight 114 come in at around 100 horsepower, and over 120 foot-pounds of torque delivered in full at 3,250 rpm.

Linked and Controlled

Replacing the air system of previous touring-models, the 2019 Tri Glide Ultra now features rear emulsion-shocks with a pre-load adjuster under the seat. The brakes have been upgraded to an ABS electronically-linked system, with an automatically-adjusting piston-integrated parking brake. The traction-control system functions by automatically applying a bit of rear brake, rather than modulating the engine’s output when wheel slip is detected.

Throne Tunes

Comfort and amenities are top priorities on the 2019 Tri Glide Ultra. On the inside of the vented Batwing fairing is the standard quartet of gauges and the new BOOM! Box GTS infotainment system. Audio is delivered by four speakers, two in the inner fairing, and a pair in the Tour-Pak. The deep-scoop seat height is just shy of thirty inches off the ground, with a stepped-up passenger seat.

Trunk Junk

Ample cargo space means the 2019 Tri Glide Ultra is ready for the road. The Tour-Pak provides 3.3 cubic feet of storage and comes with a full passenger backrest and arm support. Integrated into the bodywork, the trunk provides an additional 4.4 cubic-feet of stowage for all your highway essentials. Supporting the load is a pair of fifteen-inch, seven-spoke cast aluminum rims wrapped in Dunlop Signature rubber.

Mystery Corner

Counter-steering and leaning do not apply to trikes. Yet, the design is time-proven. With changes to the suspension and the addition of traction-control, Harley-Davidson is confident that cornering capability is even better than before. The 2019 Tri Glide Ultra is without a doubt a stable platform. For the trike skeptics out there, just remember that scientists still can not fully explain why motorcycles stay upright at speed.
