Sailor Jerry's Harley-Davidson Art Series Motorcycles (Photos)
Two Americana brands, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, have put their brands together to pay homage to Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins. Check out some of the 22 customized bikes designed by artists from across the United States.
1. Rolling art
This summer 22 Harley-Davidsons that became canvases for artists whose work involves mural paintings, tattoo designs, street art, and automotive designs will tour the country. The products of the partnerships can be seen in bars, restaurants, H-D dealerships, and joint celebration events all over the United States leading up to Harley's 115th Anniversary in 2018.
2. The artists
These creatives were all tasked with interpreting the art style of Sailor Jerry through their own eyes for a unique bike design. A few artists on the roster that are taking part in customizing the motorcycles are acclaimed tattoo artists Jonathan "JonBoy" Valena, Oliver Peck, and Megan "Megan Massacre" Woznicki. Popular muralists Alexander Mijares, celebrated automotive designer, Michael "Buckwild" Ramirez, and artist L'Amour Supreme have also lent their talents for this collaboration. Also on the team are members of the official Harley-Davidson Styling crew that are using their expansive knowledge of motorcycle history to inspire their designs.
3. Three bikes to choose from
The artists were provided with a choice to take one of three bikes to make their canvases; the 2017 Iron 883, the 2017 Forty-eight, and the 2017 Roadster. Mel Stultz, the founder, and leader of the Race of Gentlemen painted the designs on the bikes for Oliver Peck, Megan Massacre, JonBoy, and L’Amour Supreme. All the others painted their own bikes for the project. The brands behind these custom bikes have something special in mind for these bikes when the tour is completed; they will give them all away in sweepstakes to 22 ticket holders.
4. Like peanut butter and jelly
"Between our shared American roots, values and traditions, collaborating with Harley-Davidson is an exciting and natural fit," said Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum Senior Brand Manager Josh Hayes. "Harley-Davidson shares Sailor Jerry's genuine Americana values for freedom and living outside the lines. With Harley-Davidson, we look forward to a long partnership that celebrates our shared brand beliefs."
5. Norman Collins
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II Norman Collins learned and honed the art of tattooing before opening his shop in Honolulu. His shop became a must-stop site for sailors and military members on leave. Collins had a unique flashy art style that still inspires artists to this day. The Sailor Jerry brand linking up with the American motoring brand Harley-Davidson was a no brainer that combines their joint values and passion for life.
"Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Harley-Davidson are all about freedom of expression and customization, whether that is expressed by a Norman Collins tattoo or a bike," said Scott Beck, Harley-Davidson Director of Marketing. "We are struck by the natural ties Sailor Jerry has to the motorcycle culture."
