Default Cruise Control Installation on SG

Has anyone personally installed cruise control on their street glide? I did it on my 2004 RKC and had no problems. Just wondering if it is as simple to do on the SG?

I've personnally done it on two, but never a RKC, nevertheless, it was easy to do if you have some mechanical ability. The only main difference is all the wires are either behind the fairing or under the ingnition.

With the exception of mounting the Cruise on/off switch in the fairing cap, and not having to disturb the left handlebar controls, the installation is probably the same. A couple of suggestions: purchase a couple of extra small "c" clips that attach the cruise cable to the throttle (part no. 11193) and brass ferules for the throttle/idle cables. They can dissappear during installation and having spares avoids a trip to the dealer mid-installation.

Well, I have a fair amount of mechanical ability and I found this job a bitch. The problems:

(1) Wiring the fairing switch. The switch has, IIRC, three small wires with small pin connectors that are to be inserted in a harness already on the bike. They tell you to refer to the manual for that phase, but when you go to the Cruise Control section they mention pin numbers but don't give a schematic as to where these pins are located. Further, the harness pins aren't marked. More futzing around led me to the electrical section, never referred to either by the instructions or CC section, and I finally found the pin locations. A simple diagram in the instructions would've been nice, but they want you to (1) buy a manual, or (2) get frustrated and take it to the dealer.

(2) Okay, got the locations where to insert the pin connectors, but these things didn't want to go in. Yes, there is a section in the manual (mentioned on this forum and seen days later) on how to insert these things. I just crammed them in with a small screwdriver, but even though this worked I would suggest using the procedure prescribed in the manual. I could've damaged them using the force needed to jam them in.

Note: The CC cable install at the throttle body is much easier with a pair of long needle-nose pliars (cheap at Harbor Freight). Some had trouble with these, but not me with these pliars. Also, if you don't want to fuss with the ignition switch, you can remove the two end screws of the fairing insert cover and bend them back, making the switch screws accessible using a ratchet with long extension.

Hours later and after visiting my HD dealer for a lost brass ferrule for the throttle or idle cable I finally got everything together. (Spent 30 min. looking for it, then after returning from the HD dealer found the lost one within two minutes). The next day I did the initialization (in the CC section of the manual but not in the instructions) and it has worked fine since. This is a great accessory and it was worth the hassle. Had I to do it again I think I could install one in two hours, but be sure to have a service manual on hand, and get the procedure down for inserting those little pin connectors and their locations before even starting.

The directions that came with my kits had the connector cavity numbers to insert the three wires!

Not to hijack but...

Anyone have experience installing cruise control on a Road King Custom.

I'm new here...if I should start a new thread on my question let me know. But I posted here because it's related.

Thanks.

Yes I installed CC on my 07 SG last month... and YES it was a bitch..

I removed the tank dash and ignition switch, lower switch housng.. And Yes I lost a brass ferrel and took 1 hour to find it..

I am now installing reduced reach bars, Just as much a bitch....

But aggravation doesn't cost 85.00 an hour... Just a couple beers...

Yeah, if it wasn't for beer, I'm not sure I'd do some of this stuff. And the thought of replacing the handlebars on this SG makes me cringe. I don't think I could drink enough beer for that.

I did install cruise control on a road king custom. The directions are very good. Just take your time and you will be all right. It comes with new set of switches and is straight forward. Just be careful when installing the switch housing and not pinch a wire. Also don't forget ot calibrate the backlatch on the cruise control cable. Just follow the instructions and the calibration is very easy.

I'm up for the challenge. It will give me somthing to do during the cold weather days in Indiana. Just concerned that something might be hidden in the instructions.
