Got smoke???
I do. [
] And not the good kind.
I recently got done with some upgrades (SE ignition & coil, plug wires & plugs, carb, cam & Torrington bearing, lifters, pushrods, and pipe) on my 98 EVO and now I've got the blues...blue smoke that is.
Edit to add that the video doesn't show the smoke as well as in person...quality got lost while uploading. And when I blip the throttle, the smoke will shoot out about 6 feet.
The carb still isn't fine tuned...it's a little sluggish on the low end, but absolutely pulls like a b!t@h from mid on! Very impressive.
I first noticed it while 150 miles from home this last weekend. The guys I was with thought it was too rich. Checked the plugs and they looked good (I think).
As soon as I got home I checked the compression. Both cylinders are right near 160. But when I pulled the A/C off, there was a fair amount of oil in there that hadn't been there before the smoke started. I thought (wished) that it was the breathers puking oil into the air cleaner and the engine burning it causing the smoke. Nope. I removed the breathers from the back of my SE A/C and got the same results.
Then I thought it was the new Mik 42. The stock pilot jet is a -25 which I bumped it up to a -27.5 almost immediately and then a -30. Put the 25 back in...still smokin'.
Was it something I did during the upgrades....or didn't do???
What are some other things to check?
Here's a vid while rinning.
Here's a vid after shutdown.
Here's a pic of my plugs.
Please help.

Blue smoke is oil
Black smoke is rich
White is water
How many miles since the upgrades? Could it be something burning off inside the new pipe? If it didn't burn oil before the build, I see no reason why it would after.

I'm guessing at this point that I've smoked an exhaust valve seal or cracked a guide...not sure what would cause one of those though.
How much back pressure is there in the crankcase? Does it seem to be blowing out of the breathers stronger than before? I'm not sure what your SE air cleaner looks like but is there a way to run it with the breathers hooked up? Pulling the pipe should let you see into the exhaust port and see the valve stem to tell if oil is present.
I did temporarily reroute the breathers using clear tubing and rode for a while. No oil came out of them.
I only wish I could afford a polish job. I talked to one guy a couple weeks ago and he said it's like $1600 for a port / polish (flow) on an EVO.

No not personally, but I have heard good things about them on this forum. One of the moderators "Springer_" either works with them or knows them real well. I would suggest you shop around, I posted there site just to show you that the $1600 was rediculous. It's kind of a crap shoot if you don't know the shops reputation, porting is more of an art than a skill. Any smuck can run a grinder, makingthe headflow efficiently is the art. I've looking into it a little, and I think I would go to Big Boys if I were to do it. If I ever have to take the heads off, I will get them done, but for now I look at it like if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Well...just got done with a leakdown test.
Rear cylinder: right a 10%
Front cylinder: 25%!! Ouch. Leakage out the exhast valve and also what sounded like the crankcase.
Looks like I'll be pulling heads (and teeth).
