Default primary chain tension tool

I did a search but could not find this. A while back I saw that someone made a tool (home made) that made it pretty easy for checking the right tension. I think it was made out of a coat hanger. I'm having a problem figuring out how to measure the hight of the chain per the book specs. Any help out there.

I took a piece of wooden base board and cut it so that it fits in there at an angle and works great, wood won't harm the teeth either. May have cost 50 cents.

Here's what I do....after the inspection cover is removed,I use one the screws to hold a 6" scale on on the side of the case. Then I use a 3/8" rachet with a 5/8" deep socket.Place the rachet/socket in the case so the bottom of the socket is under the chain. With the rachet handle sticking out horizontal, push up on the rachet and then read the distance againest the scale and the rachet handle.

Peter,
Thanks. I had seen this video before but completely forgot about it. Now I now what I was doing wrong. I was trying to determine the tension from the bottom and not the free play at the top of the chain, daaaa...no wonder I could not figure out how to get a gauge in there. Thnaks again you all for the help, now if I can only remeber this for the next service...The Harley manual does not really spell it out on this issue like you think it would.
