89 sporty throttle cable question
Hello all my buddy just bought an 89 sporty 1200 that has an s&s carb on and was told it was a 40mm intake on it, the throttle cables are way to long on both sides and I'm having trouble finding the correct replacements for it. Measuring the casing of the cables they measure right about 32" I've not ever changed them before so I'm unsure how there supposed to be measured and have found conflicting info online. Does anyone know right off what cables I need for that setup? Or a solid here's how to accurately measure them and were to order from? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have an 1988 Sportster I just bought cables for from the J&P website, and got them wrong the first time - they had 4" of travel, and were for and S&S carb. The stock carb needs 5" travel by comparison, so I had to send back and reorder the correct cables. As was said, length is the sheath.
The J&P website wasn't real clear on the cables, BUT if you go to the Online Catalog (the one that is the copy of the PRINT catalog, or the actual Print catalog), it spells out what cables are for what carb.
Or do a chat with J&P cycles, they will set you straight.
