Default Convert drain plug in older primary?

I have an older Dyna, 2002, that has the tapered drain plug. Has anybody drilled/tapped and successfully converted to the now standard 5/8ths head drain plug?

Sounds like a good idea, let us know how it works out. Have you considered the length of the 5/8 drain plug and if it will hit the starter ring gear?

The newer style is a better design.

How so? One thing pipe threads have going for them is that they will seal without placing a side load on the threads. Very resistant to stripping. Also very resistant to loosening from vibration.

I wouldn't try to change it.

My FXRS-sp, which I owned 18 years, never had a problem with that plug, and it went through a LOT of fluid changes.

Best advice regarding the tapered plug is -- don't try to over-torque it. Hand-tight and "just a little more" is all that's needed. Never had it back out like that...
